The mole fraction of benzene in a solution containing 30% by mass of carbon tetrachloride is 0.461. Mole fraction gives us the concentration of a particular component in a certain solution. In this particular question, there is 30% benzene which means there is 70% carbon tetrachloride. This is the quantity and not the concentration. So, to calculate the concentration of benzene, we will follow the process given below.

Mole Fraction of Benzene in a Solution With 30% Carbon Tetrachloride

To calculate the mole fraction of benzene in the given case, we first have to understand that since beneze is 30% this means that the carbon tetrachloride is 70% in a solution.

Now, we will assume that the mass of the solution is 100 g.

The number of moles in benzene can be calculated in the following way:

Mass of benzene = 30g

molar mass of benzene = 78

Number of moles = Weight in grams divided by Molecular weight

Number of moles of benzene = 30/78

=0.38

Similarly, the number of moles in carbon tetrachloride can be calculated in this way:

Mass of carbon tetrachloride = 70g

molar mass of carbon tetrachloride = 154

Number of moles of carbon tetrachloride

= Given mass of carbon tetrachloride divided by the Molecular mass of carbon tetrachloride

Number of moles of carbon tetrachloride = 70/154

=0.45

Now, we have a total number of moles which is:

= 0.38+0.45 = 0.83

Now by using the equation provided below, we will calculate the mole fraction of benzene.

Mole fraction of benzene = Number of moles of benzene divided by Number of moles of benzene + Number of moles of carbon tetrachloride

Mole fraction of benzene = 0.38/0.38+0.45 = 0.461

Thus, the mole fraction of benzene here is 0.461.

Summary:

Calculate the mole fraction of benzene in a solution containing 30% by mass of carbon tetrachloride

0.461 is the mole fraction of benzene in a solution containing 30% by mass of carbon tetrachloride. Mole fraction refers to the number of molecules of a component in a mixture which is divided by the total number of moles in the given mixture. It is used to know about the concentration of a component in a mixture.
