October 2022 Important Days - Overview

  • Gandhi Jayanti

2 October marks the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as 'Father of the Nation.' A national holiday is observed in India on this day to celebrate his service, dedication, and efforts towards India's Independence. Gandhiji's non-violent way of life is an inspiration worldwide. Hence the day is also designated as the International Day of Non-Violence by the UN General Assembly. Prayer meets, commemorative ceremonies, and painting and essay competitions in schools and colleges are popular activities conducted on this day.

  • World Animal Welfare Day

World Animal Day celebrates the dynamic relationship between humans and animals. The day emphasizes each creature's role in maintaining the ecological balance. On this day, animal activists worldwide spread awareness on animal issues and also bring to light the brutal human behavior, at times, towards them.

  • International Day of the Girl Child

Gender inequality is a persistent issue around the globe. A day dedicated to the girl child helps to highlight issues such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, child marriage, and violence against women. The initiative began as a project of an NGO called Plan International. The NGO's campaign 'Because I am a Girl' raised awareness about nurturing girls worldwide. In 2012, the UN declared 11 October as International Day of the Girl.
