Arithmetic has been a crucial and elementary branch of Mathematics for a long time. The study thoroughly orients around numbers, specifically addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Apart from these, Arithmetic also spans over advanced operations, including percentage computations, logarithmic functions, exponentiation, and square roots.

In this article, we’ve mentioned some useful SSC arithmetic questions, arithmetic short tricks, arithmetic shortcuts, and arithmetic formula to prepare students for arithmetic for SSC. These topics will help you practice arithmetic questions and answers for your competitive exam, including SSC CGL, IBPS, and SBI PO. Further, we recommend our arithmetic questions and answers pdf for SSC CGL, CHSL, and SBI Clerk.

Important Topics Arithmetic Covers:

Furthermore, the SSC arithmetic syllabus comprises several SSC arithmetic chapters, including Ratio, Percentage, Average, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Pipes and Cisterns, SI & CI, Time, Speed and Distance.

TopicBrief
Ratio
Comparison/simplified form of 2 quantities having similar kind is termed as a ratio. To denote ratio, the “:” sign is used.
Percentage
A percentage is a ratio representing a fraction of 100. Usually, denoted by the “%” symbol “%” or “pct.”
AverageAverage refers to the ‘central’ point of a data set.
Profit and Loss
The profit, also called gain, is equal to SP-CP. Where SP is the selling price, and CP is the cost price. Loss is equal to CP-SP.
Time and Work
Depicts the time taken to perform a certain amount of work and vice-versa.
Pipes and Cisterns
The pipes and cisterns topic usually covers two kinds of pipes one is Inlet pipe, and the other is Outlet pipe. The Inlet pipe fills the cistern, and the Outlet pipe empties it.
SI & CI
Simple interest or SI is the method for calculating the interest charged on a specific amount. Compound Interest or CI represents the interest earned on the previous money.

Tips to Solve/ Prepare Arithmetic Questions

  • Adding Large Numbers

Adding large numbers can be a bit difficult; thus, simplify the process by making numbers multiple of 10. For example:

644 + 238

Make them multiple of 10, i.e., 650 and 240.

Add 650 and 240 = 890.

650 – 644 = 6 & 240 – 238 = 2

In total, we have added 6 and 2 as an extra amount that is 8.

Subtract this amount from the total sum.

890 – 8 = 882

So the answer to 644 +238 becomes 882.

  • Subtracting from 1,000

Understand the basic rule for subtracting a large no from 1,000.

Subtract each no except the last one from 9 & subtract the last one from 10

To understand:

1,000 – 556

Begin with 5 - 9 = 4

Second digit: 5 - 9 = 4

Last digit 6 - 10 = 4

The answer will be 444.

  • Multiplying By 9

To understand this, let’s go through an example:

9 x 3

Begin by subtracting 1 from 3.

3 – 1 = 2

2 will be the first digit of your answer.

Then subtract 2 from 9

9 – 2 = 7

7 will be the second digit of your answer.

Thus, 9 x 3 = 27

Importance of Arithmetic Section of Competitive Banking & Government Exams

You can’t think of mathematics without going through the basics of Arithmetic. Most of the questions come from the Arithmetic section covering questions from Ratio, Average, SI & CI, Percentage, and many more.

  • These topics are most common in banking and Government exams.
  • Several quantitative questions come from this section.
  • About 1/3rd of the maths section orients around the Arithmetic domain.
  • So, one must focus more on the SSC arithmetic topics to score higher.
  • Candidates with higher Arithmetic Ability are better equipped for working in positions that seek more mathematical sense and knowledge.

Due to this Arithmetic Ability or Numerical Ability, questions are generally asked within the placement tests of Competitive banking and other Government exams.
