What are the GATE Eligibility Criteria?
GATE eligibility criteria are the officially set rules and conditions for candidates applying for the exam. GATE Exam Age Limit
As per the official notification, no minimum or maximum GATE age limit is specified to appear for the examination under the eligibility criteria.

Therefore, as per the GATE exam age limit, candidates of any age group can appear in the exam. Any candidate following the GATE exam eligibility criteria can give the exam at any age.

GATE Education Qualification
The most important GATE exam eligibility criterion is educational qualification. Candidates who are currently enrolled in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree program or who have finished any government-approved degree program in any of the following fields are eligible to take the GATE exam:
- Engineering
- Technology
- Science
- Commerce
- Arts
- Architecture

Note: Candidates who are studying or have already acquired a degree higher than that shown below will be allowed to sit for the GATE 2023 exam.
B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Pharm.
- Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in engineering or technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc. / Diploma in Engineering / Technology).
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
B.Arch.
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Architecture (5-year program), Naval Architecture (4-year program), or Planning (4- year course)
- Expected Year of Completion: 2025 (for the 5-year program), 2024 (for the 4-year program)
B.Sc. (B.S./Research)
- Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Post-Diploma/4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final/3rd year of such programs.
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
Pharm. D. (after 10+2)
- A six-year degree program includes internship or residency training beginning in the third year.
- Currently in the third, fourth, fifth, or sixth year, or has previously completed.
- Expected Year of Completion: 2025
M.B.B.S.
- M.B.B.S. degree holders and those in the program's 5th/6th/7th semester or higher semester.
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
M.Sc./ M.A./ MCA or equivalent
- Candidates must have completed or be in the last year of a Master's degree program in any discipline of science, mathematics, statistics, or computer applications.
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
M.Tech./ Int. M.E.
- Integrated Master's degree programs in Engineering/ Technology for post-B.Sc students (4-year program)
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
Int. M.E./ M.Tech or Dual Degree
- Engineering/Technology Dual Degree Program or Integrated Master's Degree Program (5-year program)
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
Int. M.Sc./ Int.B.S.-M.S
- Those in their last year of a five-year Integrated M.Sc. or five-year Integrated B.Sc./ M.Sc. degree.
- Expected Year of Completion: 2024
Professional Courses Equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech
- Professional Societies' B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch. Equivalent examinations accepted by the MoE/ UPSC/ AICTE (e.g., AMIE by the Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India, and so on)
GATE Exam Nationality
Nationality is one of the essential factors of the GATE exam eligibility. Various foreign nationals are permitted to appear in the GATE exam. The entire list of the nationality-based GATE eligibility criteria is mentioned below:
- Indian national candidates will be eligible for the exam.
- Nepal,
- Bangladesh,
- Sri Lanka,
- Singapore,
- Ethiopia and
- United Arab Emirates (U.A.E).
GATE Exam Eligibility for Foreign Nationals
The GATE Eligibility for Foreign Nationals is that the candidates shall be at least in the 3rd year or have completed the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Science/ Arts/ Technology/ Commerce. The Bachelor’s degree must have at least 3 years.
- Candidates from other nations may also apply for the GATE 2023 exam, including those from Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- Candidates must have completed their bachelor's degree in engineering or technology or be in their last or third year of study.
- Students must have finished their PG degree in relevant science topics, be in their final year of study, or be preparing to complete their studies.
Documents Required to Support GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023
The GATE exam eligibility 2023 also lists the documents candidates must present while filling out the GATE application form for the exam. Candidates failing to submit those documents will face the rejection of their application form. The candidates must submit the following documents to fall under the GATE eligibility.
- The society or institute issues the degree certificate, course completion certificate, or provisional degree certificate if the candidate has completed any of the abovementioned degrees.
- Candidates must upload their Provisional Certificate Letter (as issued by the Head of the Institute/ Dean/ Registrar/ Head of Department) or copy the marks card for Section A of AMIE, etc. If the candidate is expected to complete one of the qualifying criteria in 2023 or later
- No document has to be shipped by post. All the documents have to be uploaded while filling out the online application.
- Upload a copy of any of the mark sheets of the final year issued from the institute where they were studying in case the candidates with backlogs (failed subjects) in any of the subjects in their qualifying examination.
- The certificate of Dyslexia must be presented as a scanned copy(if applicable).
- PwD certificate must be presented as a scanned copy(if applicable).
- Category certificates for SC/ ST candidates must be presented as a scanned copy(if applicable).
