SSC CGL Selection Process 2021

SSC CGL exam is divided into four stages i.e. Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and finally Tier 4. Based on the marks scored in Tier 1 i.e. Computer Based Examination, candidates will be shortlisted category-wise, to appear in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Examinations. This means candidates who will clear SSC CGL Tier 1 2021 will be eligible to appear for Tier 2 & Tier 3 as well.

SSC CGL Selection Process for Tier 1

Tier 1 consists of four subjects i.e. Quantitative Aptitude, English, Reasoning, and General Knowledge. It is a computer-based multiple-choice type examination with 100 questions (25 of each subject) with a time limit of 60 minutes. Each question is of 2 marks and carries a negative of 0.5 marks on marking the wrong answer. 

Tier 1 is not merely a qualifying paper or in other words score of Tier 1 is added in making qualifying list for Tier 2 & 3 examination as well as in the preparation of final merit list. Hence marks obtained in Tier 1 are of great help in the final selection procedure. Students scoring high in Tier 1 increase their chances of getting into the final merit list. Hence, a good score in Tier 1 not only benefits you till the end but also builds confidence in Tier 2 and the following procedure in candidates. SSC CGL Selection Process for Tier 2

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam is the most vital and decision-making examination among all Tiers. It contains two papers namely Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension (both of 200 marks each). This Tier 2 contains a total of 400 marks hence plays a decisive role in selection. 

Students who have filled Statistical Investigator and Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer during application will also have to appear for Paper 3 and Paper 4, respectively.

Candidate must also note the following points:

  • For all Posts: Candidates appearing for Tier 2 have to take Paper-I and Paper-II.
  • Candidates, who have filled Junior Statistical Officer Post have to take Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III.
  • Candidates who have filled Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer Post have to take Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-IV

Important Note: Candidates who have filled posts of Statistical Investigator and AAO, have to appear in all Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III and Paper-IV.

Selection Process of SSC CGL Exam Tier 3

This time all those candidates who will qualify Tier 1 will be able to sit for Tier 2 and Tier 3 exam. SSC CGL 2019 Tier 3 Exam will be of Descriptive in Nature (offline) to test the writing skills of candidates. It consists of 100 marks. In this exam, Essay/ Application /Letter/ Precis/ Report – Writings will be asked. This examination is not only of qualifying nature (at least 33 marks out of 100) but the marks are also included in final merit list preparation. This Tier is introduced by scrapping interview, hence the basic objective of this tier 3 exam is to check personality as well as writing skills of a candidate which is much necessary for a person to serve any government department all over India.

NOTE: A candidate who qualifies Tier 1 exam will have to appear for Tier 2 and Tier 3. One thing to note here is that if a candidate fails to procure enough marks in Tier 1 and Tier 2 then his copies for Tier 3 will not be checked.

SSC CGL Selection Process for Tier 4

All candidates who will qualify SSC CGL 2019 Tier 2 & Tier 3 Exam will have to appear for SSC CGL Tier 4 Exam. Tier 4 is of qualifying nature; no marks will be added in the final merit list. This means that if a candidate fails in CPT or DEST Test he/she will not be considered for the respective posts as given in the table provided below.
As per the latest notification, CPT is mandatory for many inspectors as well as assistant posts (mentioned below table), hence the importance of Tier 4 is no less than any other Tiers.

  • Please note that as per the latest notification CPT is made mandatory for Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Preventive Officer) and Inspector (Examiner)

Final selection for all posts will be done on the basis of merit list of Tier 1+ Tier 2+ Tier 3.

    • Set a target to achieve 165+ score in Tier 1

    • Prepare well for Tier 3 and Tier 4 as well.
  • No, as per the latest exam pattern, there is no interview conducted in any stage of the examination.

  • No, there is no limit to the number of attempts in SSC CGL Exam. Candidates who qualify the age limit as per their category are eligible to sit for the examination.

  • If two candidates obtain same marks in Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 combined, then SSC board will follow the process mentioned below:

    • The candidate with more marks in Tier 2 will be given priority
    • If the tie still exists, then marks of Tier 3 will also be considered
    • On condition of the tie in Tier 2 and Tier 3 marks combined, the older candidate between the two will be given priority
  • No, Tier 4 is qualifying in nature, marks of Tier 4 will not be added in the final merit list.

  • Yes, candidates who wish to apply for the post of Assistant Section Officer in CSS need to qualify Tier 4.

  • Yes, candidates are not able to qualify Tier 2 are also eligible to sit for Tier 3. However, the marks of Tier 3 will not be checked if the candidate qualifies Tier 1 and Tier 2 combined.

  • SSC CGL Tier 1 consists of 100 questions from 4 different subjects, 25 questions from each subject. The subjects include Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. Candidates have to solve all the questions within a time frame of 60 minutes.

  • The maximum marks for SSC CGL Tier 1 exam are 200.
