WBCS Prelims syllabus consists of only one objective type of paper. The paper consists of General Studies for a total of 200 marks. The Prelims are held only for the purpose of screening out candidates. The selection of the candidates is only on the Mains and Interview marks. English Composition: Vocabulary tests, Synonyms, and Antonyms, Phrasal Verbs, Idioms and Phrases, One-word substitution, Homophones, Fill in the blanks with proper parts of speech
General Science: Understanding of science, General Appreciation, Including matters of everyday observation and experience as may be expected of a well-educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.
History of India: It shall include questions from ancient, medieval, and modern India. For this, candidates can use NCERT books as a reference.
Geography of India (a reference to West Bengal): Main features of Indian Agricultural and Natural Resources, Physical Geography, Social, and Economic Geography, Geography of West Bengal
Indian Polity and Economy: The polity syllabus questions Panchayati Raj, Planning in India, Community Development, Political System, Indian Constitution, etc.
Indian National Movement: Since this is an important part, hence, has questions on the growth of nationalism in India, the Nature and Character of the 19th Century Resurgence, the Indian Independence Movement, the Revolt of 1857, etc.
General Mental Ability: This subject tests a candidate's basic arithmetics. The important topics included are logical perception, natural conclusion, understanding, etc.
