BPSC Syllabus 2023 has been released by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) for the 68th BPSC exam. Candidates who wish to be appointed into the Bihar PSC services must get acquainted with the latest syllabus and exam pattern that has been provided here. BPSC syllabus is segregated into Prelims and Mains exam followed by an interview. Prelims is qualifying in nature while makes of Mains and Interview will be used to determine the merit list.

There has been a slight change in the 68th BPSC syllabus. BPSC Prelims syllabus consists of a single paper which is the General Studies (GS) paper. There shall be a negative marking in Prelims of 0.25 marks. BPSC syllabus for Mains consists of Hindi, GS 1, GS 2 and an optional subject. Both stages will have a strong reference to Bihar GK for the social, economic, political and cultural references. BPSC Syllabus 2023

BPSC Syllabus 2023 is segregated into two written stages, Prelims and Mains. BPSC Prelims exam is the first stage which is qualifying in nature. Candidates who clear Prelims appear for the BPSC Mains exam which is conventional in nature. Merit list shall be determined on the basis of the marks obtained in BPSC Mains and Interview. No change is there in BPSC syllabus 2023 so far.

BPSC Prelims Syllabus

BPSC Prelims exam is used to test the candidate’s basic understanding of General Knowledge. BPSC Prelims syllabus builds the foundation of the candidates that are needed to qualify for the Mains exam. Prelims syllabus consists of only one subject which is the General Studies paper. Here are some noteworthy points you need to know regarding the BPSC syllabus for Prelims

  • All the questions shall be objective in nature in the Prelims exam. 
  • There is a negative marking of 0.25 in this paper. 
  • The BPSC Pre exam is screening in nature and its marks will not be considered for the final selection.

The BPSC Syllabus for Prelims for General Studies (GS) is as follows: Here are important that is to be covered in the written exam which is objective in nature.

  • Current Affairs of national and international importance. 
  • History of India and its salient feature 
  • History of Bihar 
  • Geography of Bihar
  • Geography of India
  • The geographical division of Bihar, major river systems 
  • Physical, social and economic Geography of the country including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources
  • features of Indian agricultural and natural resources.
  • Indian Polity and Economy
  • Major changes in the economy of Bihar post-independence 
  • Indian National Movement and role played by Bihar in it 
  • Questions on the Indian National Movement shall have questions on the nature and character of the 19th-century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence
  • General Mental Ability questions 
  • General Science that will test the understanding of Science, matters of everyday observation and experience 
  • Understanding of the subject in its social, economic and political aspects 
  • Indian Polity and Economy will test the candidate’s knowledge about the country’s political system, Panchayati Raj, community development, planning in India and Bihar 

BPSC Mains Syllabus

BPSC Mains syllabus focuses majorly on the General Studies knowledge of the candidates. There shall be 4 papers in the Mains exam consisting of General Hindi, General Studies 1, General Studies 2 and Optional subject. 

The candidates can select any one paper out of a list of 34 papers for the BPSC Mains exam. Below is the syllabus for the BPSC Mains exam for all the subjects.

BPSC Mains Syllabus for Hindi

BPSC Syllabus for Mains exam for Hindi shall be descriptive in nature and will be qualifying. The syllabus for Hindi shall be based on the  Bihar School Education Board (BSEB) level. You can study from any good book for Hindi to prepare for this subject. The details of the topics in the Mains syllabus are given below. 

  • निबंध (Essay): An essay will have to be written in Hindi on any one topic as given in the paper

  • व्याकरण (Grammar): अलंकार, पर्यायवाची,  विलोम,  तत्सम एवं तदभव, वर्तनी, लिंग, कारक, आदि|

  • वाक्य विन्यास (Syntax)

  • संक्षेपण (Summarisation)

BPSC Mains Syllabus for GS Paper 1

BPSC Syllabus for GS papers and optional papers have an importance that will determine your merit list. The BPSC Syllabus for GS Paper 1 is an extension of what you studied for the Prelims. However, for the Mains syllabus, you would need to answer the questions in a descriptive manner. Here is the syllabus for GS Paper 1 exam for BPSC. 

  • Modern History of India and Indian Culture: This will have questions based on India's history with special reference to Bihar from the 19th century onwards. 
  • Modern History of Bihar will have questions on the introduction and expansion of western education, technical education as well. 
  • Bihar’s role in the freedom struggle of India
  • Santhal Uprising, Revolt of 1857 in Bihar, Birsa movement, Champaran Satyagrah, Quit India Movement, 1942 
  • Knowledge of Mauryan and Pal art features 
  • Patna Kalam painting 
  • Questions based on Gandhi, Tagore and Nehru
  • Statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams will consist of exercises to test the candidate’s ability to draw common-sense conclusions from information presented in statistical, graphical or diagrammatic form and to point out deficiencies, limitations or inconsistencies therein. 

BPSC Mains GS GS Paper 2 Syllabus

BPSC Syllabus for GS Paper 2 will have questions that test your knowledge about the Indian Polity with emphasis on Bihar. 

  • Indian Political system including political system in Bihar 
  • Indian economy, Planning in India, 
  • Geography of India such as the physical, economic and social geography of India and Bihar 
  • The role and impact of science and technology in the development of India and Bihar 
  • Questions will be asked to test your knowledge your awareness of Science in India and Bihar

Having knowledge of at least 6 months' current events is needed to be revised by the candidates before the exam. 

  • There is a subtle difference between the syllabus of BPSC and UPSC exams. The one major difference in the BPSC exam syllabus is the inclusion of Bihar GK. Further, there is one single  General Studies Paper in the BPSC exam as compared to the UPSC syllabus where there are two papers. Thereafter, the Mains exam syllabus for BPSC has 4 papers where General Hindi, GS 1, GS 2 and optional papers are there. General Hindi is qualifying in nature.
