RRB NTPC selection process mainly consists of five stages that provide complete details on the overall recruitment cycle. Candidates who are planning to appear for the exam should know the RRB NTPC selection process 2023 to prepare well for the exam. It includes the following stages CBT 1, CBT 2, Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) or Typing Skill Test followed by document verification and medical examination.

There are multiple job profiles in the Non-Technical Popular Categories recruitment at various levels. The RRB NTPC selection procedure for each post is different as per the guidelines prescribed by the Railway Recruitment Board. Thus, candidates should know the stages of selection for their preferred post well. This will help them plan their preparation efficiently. RRB NTPC Selection Process 2023

RRB NTPC Selection Process is released along with the official notification. Candidates should know all the stages of the selection procedure so they can plan for the various events of the recruitment. RRB NTPC selection process mainly comprises five stages which are as follows:

  • First stage Computer Based Test (CBT 1)
  • Second stage Computer Based Test (CBT 2)
  • Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)/Typing Skill Test
  • Document Verification
  • Medical Examination

RRB NTPC Level-wise Selection Process

These first three stages might vary for different posts in the RRB NTPC recruitment. For the post of Station Master and Traffic Assistant, there are 2 stages of Computer-Based Tests and another Computer Based Aptitude Test. For the posts of Junior Time Keeper/ Junior Clerk/Senior Time Keeper/ Junior Account Assistant cum Typist /Senior Clerk cum Typist/ Accounts Clerk cum Typist, the two CBTs are followed by a skill test. RRB NTPC Selection Process CBT 1

The detailed RRB NTPC selection process is explained in the subsequent sections for a complete understanding of the aspirants. After filling out the application form, candidates are asked to appear in the first Computer Based Test (CBT 1) which is common for all posts. RRB NTPC selection process for CBT 1 involves three sections which must be cleared by the candidates - Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness.

  • It is a 90-minute test carrying a total of 100 marks.
  • The marks obtained at this stage will determine the eligibility of the candidate for Stage 2.
  • The candidate must obtain the minimum qualifying marks in each section and more than the cut-off marks in aggregate to make it to the next stage. The minimum passing marks in the selection process of RRB NTPC CBT 1 for different categories are as follows UR/EWS - 40%, OBC/SC - 30% and ST - 25%.
  • In the CBT 1 paper, there is a negative marking of 1/3 for each incorrect answer.

RRB NTPC Selection Process CBT 2

Those who clear the stage 1 paper will be qualified for the second Computer Based Test (CBT 2) which is higher in difficulty level and conducted separately for different posts as per the level in the 7th CPC. The RRB NTPC selection process for CBT 2 includes the same subjects as CBT 1.

  • A total number of questions is 120 which needs to be completed in 90 minutes of time.
  • There is a negative marking of 1/3 marks for each wrong answer.
  • Based on the CBT 1 merit list, candidates equal to 20 times the number of total vacancies are shortlisted to take the Stage 2 CBT.

Only after qualifying for this test, the selected candidates will get a call for the next stage exam as per the posts they have applied for.

RRB NTPC Skill Test

The next stage in the RRB NTPC selection process is the Skill Test. This is held as per the merit list of the Stage 2 CBT, and the number of selected candidates is 8 times the vacancies available. There are two types of tests according to the different posts. They are, namely, Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) and Typing Skill Test (TST).

Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT):

Those who have applied for the post of Traffic Assistant and Station Master and have successfully cleared the first two stages of the RRB NTPC selection process will be called for the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). In the merit list, those who have scored at least 70% in CBT 2 and 30% in CBAT will be shortlisted. A minimum T-Score of 42 marks in each of the test batteries is required by the candidates to qualify this stage. There is no negative marking in CBAT and the questions will be asked in English and Hindi only.

Typing Skill Test:

Another type of skill test for the posts of Senior Time Keeper, Senior Clerk Cum Typist, Accounts Clerk, Junior Clerk Cum Typist, and Junior Time Keeper is the Typing Skill Test which is qualifying in nature. Candidates should type at least 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi on a personal computer without any editing tools to clear this exam.

RRB NTPC Selection Process Document Verification

Based on the performance in CBT 2 and the Skill Test, candidates equal to the number of vacancies will be called for Document Verification. Those who won’t appear for the DV stage will not be able to make it to the final merit list. At this stage of the RRB NTPC selection process, the candidate’s original documents are checked and verified by the officials such as the education certificate, mark sheet, category certificate, etc. Check the list of documents to be shown at this stage:

  • 10th mark sheet
  • 12th mark sheet/Graduation Degree or Certificate
  • Category proof for reserved categories
  • Income certificate for those qualified in the EWS category
  • Jammu and Kashmir Domicile Certificate, if applicable
  • Death Certificate of husband for widow candidates, etc

Every selected candidate has to pass through the medical examination test which is the last yet crucial step of the RRB NTPC Selection Process. But every candidate must know that the RRBs only suggest the names of empanelled candidates. However, the appointment is offered by the respective RRB departments.

FAQs on RRB NTPC Selection Process

  • RRB NTPC Selection Process is the recruitment process based on which the candidates are selected for various posts in the Indian Railways. It comprises four stages which are CBT 1, CBT 2, Skill Test, and Document Verification/Medical Examination. 

  • No, there is a slight variation in the RRB NTPC selection process for different posts. Stage 1 CBT is common for all levels and posts, while the CBT 2 paper is taken separately for different levels and posts mentioned in the table given above. Candidates are advised to check the selection process of RRB NTPC as per their selected profile through the above post.

  • The first stage of the RRB NTPC selection procedure is CBT (Computer Based Test). It includes a total of 100 questions from three subjects - General Awareness, Mathematics, and Reasoning. There is a negative marking of 1/3 for each wrong answer and a +1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer.

  • The final stage of the RRB NTPC selection process 2022 is the Document Verification and Medical Test of the selected candidates. The number of candidates called for DV is equal to the number of vacancies. Those who will be able to make it to the final stage will get their name enlisted in the final merit list.

  • Usually, the time taken by the entire RRB NTPC selection process to complete is more than a year. RRB NTPC is a national level competitive exam which is conducted region-wise across India. The ongoing RRB NTPC recruitment process started on 01 March 2019 and at present, the CBT 2 exam is scheduled to be held from 12 June to 17 June 2022.

  • RRB NTPC Selection Process for CBT 2 comprises an objective test containing 120 questions in total. It is conducted separately for different posts and levels. The difficulty level of questions in this paper is higher than the CBT 1 test. The marks scored by candidates in CBT 2 and in the Skill Test will be considered in the merit list for Document Verification.

  • The subjects in both CBT 1 and CBT 2 are the same, but still, the selection process of RRB NTPC CBT 1 and 2 are different because of the following reasons:

    • The difficulty level of CBT 2 is higher than CBT 1.
    • CBT 2 scores are considered while preparing the final merit list. The normalised scores of CBT 1 are taken into account to shortlist candidates for CBT 2 paper.
    • There are 100 questions in CBT 1 which have to be attempted in 90 minutes, while there are 120 questions in CBT 2 expected to be done in the same duration.
  • There are four stages in the RRB NTPC selection process which are as follows:

    • Computer Based Test (CBT 1)
    • Second stage Computer Based Test (CBT 2)
    • Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)/Typing Skill Test
    • Document Verification and Medical Examination
  • In case of the same marks of two or more candidates, the merit will be decided according to the age criteria or alphabetical order.

  • The RRB NTPC selection process for station master consists of CBT 1 and CBT 2 followed by document verification and a medical exam. The Station Master post does not require skill test.

  • RRB NTPC Level 5 Selection Process consists of the following stages, CBT  1, CBT 2 followed by a skill test. Those who qualify these stages are then called for document verification and medical examination.
