At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: September 25th, 2023

The temperature at which Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal is -40 degrees. Celsius and Fahrenheit are different scales that are used to measure temperature. The main difference between these two scales is the base measurement. While the melting point of a Celsius scale is 0 degrees, the same for a Fahrenheit scale is 32 degrees. They both show different temperatures however, there is one point at which they both show the same temperatures. Below, we have explained in detail how to find at what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal below.

Temperature at which Celsius and Fahrenheit are Equal

To calculate a temperature at which Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal, one needs to first know the formulas for both. These formulas are:

°F=(°C X 9/5)+32

°C=(°F−32) X 5/9

One of the easier ways to find the same temperature for both scales is to assume both are equal, thus,

°C=°F

Now, taking this assumption, we will calculate the exact point at which these are two actually equal.

°C=(°C X 9/5)+32

°C−(°C X 9/5)=32

−4/5 X °C=32

°C=−32 X 5/4

°C=−40

°F=(°F X 9/5)+32

°F−(°F X 9/5)=32

−4/5 X °F=32

°F=−32 X 5/4

°F=−40

Thus, the temperature at which Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal is −40 degrees.

Celsius and Fahrenheit

Celcius and Fahrenheit are both scales used to measure temperature. The Celcius scale was developed by Andres Celsius. It takes water as its base and calculates its values accordingly. Hence, the boiling point of water which is 100 degrees is the basis for the melting point of ice on the Celsius scale which is 0 degrees.

The Fahrenheit scale was developed by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. It takes water as its base too but the boiling point is taken as 212 degrees and the melting point of ice as 32 degrees. Fahrenheit scale is mostly used in America, the Celcius scale is used in more countries. The difference between both is 180 degrees. The only temperature they are equal is -40 degrees.

Summary:

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

-40 degrees is the temperature at which Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal. Both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are different as they take different measurements for the melting point of ice. Both these measurements have a difference of 180 degrees.
