Lok Sabha Seats State Wise: The Parliament of India is comprised of the President of India and 2 houses: Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and Lok Sabha (Local Government) (House of the People). In his capacity as head of the legislature, the President has complete authority to summon and prorogue either house of Parliament, as well as dissolve the Lok Sabha. Only on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and his Union Council of Ministers can the President exercise these powers.

Lok Sabha Seats in India

The Lok Sabha, also known as the House of the People, is the lower house of India’s bicameral Parliament, with the Rajya Sabha serving as the upper chamber. Members of the Lok Sabha are elected through adult universal suffrage and a first-past-the-post voting system to represent their respective districts. They serve for a term of five years or until the dissolution of the body by the President, upon the suggestion of the Council of Ministers. The chamber convenes in the Lok Sabha Chambers of the Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi. The Constitution of India initially allowed for a limit of 500 members in the House, but it was later increased to 550. Currently, there are 543 Lok Sabha seats in India, which are filled by the election of up to 543 members.

The distribution of Lok Sabha seats in India varies from state to state, reflecting the population and representation of each region. Uttar Pradesh, being the most populous state, has the highest number of Lok Sabha seats with a total of 80 seats. Maharashtra follows closely with 48 seats. Smaller states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Rajasthan have 26, 28, and 25 seats respectively. Total Lok Sabha Seats in India

The Lok Sabha has a maximum strength of 550 members. Although it was previously 552 before the nullification of the provision reserving 2 seats for Anglo-Indians by the 104th Constitution Amendment. There are 543 total Lok Sabha seats in India. Among the states, Uttar Pradesh holds the maximum number of seats with 80, followed by Maharashtra with 48 seats. In terms of union territories, the National Capital Region of Delhi (NCR) has 7 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Facts on Lok Sabha Seats State Wise

Here are some facts regarding Lok Sabha Seats state-wise allocation.

  • In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections:
  1. Malkajgiri, Telangana had the maximum number of electors.
  2. Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and Bangalore (North), Karnataka ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in terms of the maximum number of electors.
  • The constituencies with the least number of electors were Lakshadweep, followed by Daman and Diu, and Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir (ranking 2nd and 3rd, respectively).
  • Ladakh was the largest Lok Sabha constituency area-wise, spanning around 173,267 sq. km. Barmer, Rajasthan, and Kachchh ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

  • Chandani Chowk was the smallest constituency area-wise, covering an area of 10 sq. km.

  • Indrajit Gupta, a communist leader, holds the record for being elected the maximum number of times (11 times) to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal.

  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the only leader to be elected from six different Lok Sabha constituencies (Balrampur, Vidisha, Lucknow, Gandhinagar, Gwalior, New Delhi) across four different states (Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi).

Maximum Lok Sabha Seats in India

The Constitution of India allows for a maximum of 550 members in the Lok Sabha, which was initially set at 500 in 1950. Currently, the Lok Sabha consists of 543 seats, which are filled by up to 543 elected members. Until January 2020, two additional members from the Anglo-Indian community were nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Government of India. However, this provision was abolished by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019.

The Lok Sabha operates for a term of five years from its first meeting, unless dissolved earlier. In case of an emergency proclamation, the term can be extended by Parliament through legislation or order.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh holds the maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha, with a total of 80 seats. Among these, 63 seats are designated for general candidates, while 17 seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Lok Sabha Seats in UP

One of the prominent states in terms of Lok Sabha seats is Uttar Pradesh (UP). With a total of 80 seats, UP holds the distinction of having the highest number of Lok Sabha seats among all states in India. There are 63 general seats and 17 seats for SC/ST candidates.
