SSC CHSL Typing Test: DEST Paper Pattern, Typing Speed

SSC CHSL Typing Test: The Staff Selection Commission conducts the SSC CHSL exam for the recruitment of Group B and C posts. The notification for the same has already been released on 06 December 2022 to fill 4500 vacancies. Candidates who will qualify all the stages of the exam including typing test will be recruited for posts like Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Data Entry Operator (DEO) & Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA).

SSC CHSL Typing Test is the last stage of the selection process. In order to clear this stage, candidates must know all the details related to it, like the required typing speed for SSC CHSL, paper pattern, guidelines, steps to calculate errors, etc.

SSC CHSL Typing Test

As per the revised SSC CHSL Exam Pattern, the Module II of section III Test is the last stage that candidates need to clear to get the desired job. Most of the candidates believe that after qualifying the CBT exam, things will be really smooth. However, that’s not the case. Aspirants must practice religiously and know all the tips and tricks to clear the SSC CHSL Typing Test. Listed below are a few guidelines for the SSC CHSL typing test/skill test that will make you exam-ready!

  • Module-II of Section-III will include conducting of Skill Test/ Typing Test in Session-II on the same day.
  • Skill Test/ Typing Test will be of qualifying nature.
  • Errors in the SSC CHSL Typing Test will be calculated up to 2 decimal places.

SSC CHSL Typing Test for Data Entry Operator

SSC CHSL Skill Test is mandatory for Data Entry Operators. No candidate is exempted from appearing in the Skill Test.

  • Part A – SSC CHSL Skill Test for the post of DEO/ DEO Grade ‘A’: ‘Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (Eight Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer’ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key depressions would be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer. The passage to be entered in the Computer may also be displayed on the computer
  • Candidates eligible for scribe as per Para 1 and 8.2 will be given compensatory time of 5 minutes. Therefore, duration of SSC CHSL Typing Test for such candidates will be 20 minutes.

The candidates are required to enter it on a computer at a speed of 8, 000 key depressions an hour. 

SSC CHSL Typing Speed for DEO and DEO grade ‘A’

  1. Data Entry Operator (DEO):
    • Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer.
    • The speed of 8000 key depressions per hour on the computer‟ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage.
    • The duration of the 15 Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key-depressions would be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer.
  2. Data Entry Operator Grade A:
    • Data Entry Speed of 15,000 (fifteen thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer.
    • The ‘speed of 15000 key depressions per hour on Computer‟ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage.
    • The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes and printed matter in English containing about 3700-4000 key depressions would be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer.

SSC CHSL Typing Test for LDC/ JSA

Those candidates who have applied for Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) posts must adhere to all the instructions that are presented below.

  • The medium of SSC CHSL Typing Test will be Hindi or English. The candidates will have to opt for the medium of Typing Test (i.e. either Hindi or English) in the online Application Form.
  • The choice of Typing Test given by the candidate in the online Application Form shall be treated as final and no change in the medium of Typing Test will be entertained
  • Candidates opting for English medium should have SSC CHSL typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) and those opting for Hindi medium should have SSC CHSL typing speed of 30 words per minute (w.p.m.). 35 w.p.m. and 30 w.p.m. correspond to about 10500 key depressions per hour and about 9000 SSC CHSL typing test key depressions per hour respectively.
  • The typing speed for SSC CHSL will be adjudged on the accuracy of typing on the Computer of a given text passage in 10 minutes.
  • Candidates eligible for scribe as per Para 8.1 and 8.2 will be given compensatory time of 5 minutes. Therefore, the duration of Typing Test for such candidates will be 15 minutes.
  • Passage Dictators will be provided to those VH candidates for the SSC CHSL typing test who have opted for scribe in the online application. The Passage Dictator will read out the passage to VH candidate within the allotted time period.

SSC CHSL Typing Speed for LDC/JSA

  • The computer for the exam will be provided by the Commission.
  • The typewriting skill exam is merely a qualifying test. It will consist of one paper on running matter in the following format:

 Lower Division Clerk (LDC)

  • English Typing @ 35 w.p.m.
  • Hindi Typing @ 30w.p.m. (Time Allowed – 10 minutes)
  • (35 w.p.m. and 30w.p.m. correspond to 10500 KDPH/9000 KDPH) 
  • Candidates must report to the Supervisor half an hour before the start of the exam, or at the time specified on their Admission Certificate.
  • All travel and other expenses must be provided by the candidates.

SSC CHSL Typing Test Guidelines

  • SSC CHSL Typing Test will be conducted in English or Hindi and candidates while applying for the Examination, will have to indicate his/her choice/option for Skill Test Medium in the Application Form.
  • The typing test for SSC CHSL will be of qualifying in nature.
  • It will be administered on the Computer, to be provided by the Commission or any agency authorized by the Commission.
  • Candidates opting for English medium should have a typing speed of 35 words per minute.
  • Candidates opting for Hindi medium should have a typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • The speed will be adjudged on the accuracy of typing on the Computer of a given text passage in 10 minutes.
  • If any candidate does not opt for any medium for typing, his option will be deemed to be for the English medium.

SSC CHSL Typing Test Error Calculation

Full Mistakes: The following errors are treated as full mistakes:–

  • For every omission of a word/ figure. 
  • For every substitution of a wrong word /figure.
  • For every addition of a word/figure not found in the passage.

Half Mistakes: The following errors are treated as half mistakes:–

  • Spacing Errors: Where no space is provided between two words,
    • e.g. ‘Ihope’ or undesired space is provided between the words or letters of a word e.g. hope I have, ‘I hxxave’.
  • For every spelling error committed by way of repetition, or addition or transposition or omission or substitution of a letter/letters, e.g. the word ‘spelling’ typed as ‘seeplings’ etc.
  • Wrong Capitalisation: Wrong use of capital letter for small letter and vice-versa. (This does not apply to Hindi typewriting scripts).

NOTE: Any corrections made by pen or pencil are ignored and no credit is given to such corrections.

SSC CHSL Skill Test: Things to Remember

  • If you commit more than 7% (for ur) and more than 10% (all other categories) then, you are disqualified.
  • If you skip a word or add a new word (which is not in the passage) that would be counted as a full mistake.
  • If you make any spelling mistake it would be a half mistake.
  • If you skip any line or didn’t complete the passage within the given time frame then you are automatically disqualified.
