When a dice is thrown, the probability of obtaining a number less than 4 is 1/2. Probability is also known as the possibility of an event. It refers to the chances of whether an event is likely or unlikely to happen. A dice has 6 possibilities, hence, to get the probability of getting a number that is lesser than 4, one needs to consider two factors which are the number of favorable outcomes and the total number of outcomes.

Probability of Obtaining a Number Less than 4

The probability of an event is in the range of 0 and 1. As per the norms, 0 denotes an event that is impossible and 1 denotes an event that is possible. To find out the probability of obtaining a number less than 4 when a dice is thrown, we will use the following formula –

P(E) = Total number of outcomes/Number of favorable outcomes

Solution

As a dice has 6 sides with these sides being 1,2,3,4,5 and 6.

Hence, the total number of outcomes = 6

The numbers in the dice that are less than 4 are – 1,2,3

Hence, the number of favorable outcomes = 3

By following the formula of probability, we will have = 6/3 = 1/2

Thus, when a dice is rolled, the probability of getting a number less than 4 is 1/2.

Summary:

Find the probability of obtaining a number less than 4 when a dice is thrown.

1/2 is the probability of getting a number less than 4 on a roll of dice. Probability refers to the possibility of an event happening in the range of 0 and 1. It considers the possible outcomes with total outcomes.
