Today we will be covering a very important topic from the Biology part of the General Knowledge section that is – List of Diseases caused by Viruses, Bacteria, Protozoa, and worms. Around 2-3 questions from this topic are asked in every exam. Thus, this post is very helpful for the upcoming government exams.
What are Viruses?
Viruses are even more microscopic than bacteria. They're not even a complete cell. They're just genetic material (DNA or RNA) wrapped in a protein coating. To replicate, they must utilize the structures of another cell. This means they'll only be able to survive if they're living inside of something else (such as a person, animal, or plant).
Disease caused by Viruses:
- Chickenpox - It is caused by the Varicella-zoster virus.
- Small Pox - It is caused by the Variola virus.
- Common Cold -It is caused by Rhinovirus.
- AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) - It is caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
- Measles -It is caused by the Measles virus.
- Mumps -It is caused by the Mumps virus.
- Rabies - It is caused by the Rabies virus (Rhabdoviridae family).
- Dengue fever -It is caused by the Dengue virus.
- Viral encephalitis - It is an inflammation of the brain. It is caused by the rabies virus, Herpes simplex, poliovirus, measles virus, and JC virus.
What is Bacteria?
Bacteria are single-celled, microscopic organisms that obtain nourishment from their surroundings. Your child or another living thing may be part of that environment in some instances. Some bacteria are beneficial to our health; they aid in the proper functioning of the digestive system and prevent hazardous germs from entering. Some microorganisms are utilized in the production of pharmaceuticals and vaccinations.
Disease caused by Bacteria:
- Whooping Cough - It is caused by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis.
- Diphtheria - It is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
- Cholera - It is caused by Vibrio cholera.
- Leprosy - It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae.
- Pneumonia- It is caused by Streptococcus pneumonia.
- Tetanus - It is caused by Clostridium tetani.
- Typhoid - It is caused by Salmonella typhi. Typhoid is caused by protozoa.
- Tuberculosis - It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Plague - It is caused by Yersinia pestis.
What is Protozoans?
Protozoa, like bacteria, are single-celled organisms. They are, however, larger than bacteria and include a nucleus and other cell features, resembling plant and animal cells. Moisture is a favorite of protozoa. As a result, contaminated water is frequently used to spread intestinal illnesses and the diseases they induce, such as amebiasis and giardiasis. Typhoid is caused by protozoa
Disease Caused by Protozoans:
- Malaria It is spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. The Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria is neither a virus nor a bacteria.
- Amoebic dysentery: It is caused by Entamoebahistolytica.
- Sleeping sickness: It is caused by Trypanosomabrucei.
- Kala-azar It is caused by Leishmaniadonovani.
What is Worms?
Worms are invertebrate animals that belong to several different families. Worms are animals belonging to the groups Annelida (earthworms, polychaetes), Nematoda (roundworms), Nemertea (ribbon worms), and Platyhelminthes (worms) (flatworms). To put this in context, mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles all belong to the same phylum Chordata, which means that a human is significantly more closely connected to a fish than many worms.
Disease Caused by Worms:
- Tapeworm: They are intestinal parasites. It cannot live on its own. It survives within the intestine of an animal including a human.
- Filariasis: It is caused by a thread.
- Pinworm: It is caused by a small, thin, white roundworm called Enterobiusvermicularis.
