The phenomenon of marble cancer is due to acid rain. Marble cancer is the nitric acid or sulfuric acid-induced erosion of marble statues and structures. Acid rain is another cause of it.

Explain Marble Cancer

The marble monuments are corroded by this rain because it dissolves the calcium and creates salt. One example of marble cancer is the yellowing of the Taj Mahal.

  • It also goes by the name Stone cancer.
  • The acid rain’s contaminants react with the stone to change its colour.

Acid rain: Numerous human activities that release sulphur and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere result in acid rain, which is one of these byproducts.

  • Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are produced by the burning of fossil fuels (which contain sulphate and nitrogenous materials), such as coal and oil in power plants and furnaces or gasoline and diesel in automobiles. The main causes of acid rain are SO2 and NO2 following oxidation and interaction with water.

  • Acids are formed when they combine with clouds.
  • Acid rain damages crops, trees, and plants by dissolving and washing away the nutrients necessary for their growth.
