Informal Letter: Format, Writing Style & Example on How to Write

Informal Letter format is not as strict as a formal letter. As the informal letter is used for personal messages therefore there is no fixed format for informal letter and it can vary from person to person. Informal letter writing can vary depending on the writer’s discretion and the letter content.

What is an Informal letter?

An informal letter differs from a formal letter in terms of the relationship between the sender and recipient. An informal letter is written to close acquaintances, family, friends, relatives, etc. An informal letter is commonly used for personal communication. 

The language used in an informal letter has a personal touch and an emotional undertone. The letter is addressed with a personal touch in casual, friendly language. There is less formatting and rules as compared to formal letters and you can use simple unofficial language in the letter.  

Informal letter Format: How to write Informal Letter 

An informal letter can be composed in almost any way you prefer, but there are a few guidelines you can follow if you are doubtful of what to write or how to write an informal letter. The beginning consists of the sender’s address and date. Then the whole informal letter consists of three sections:

  • Opening
  • Body text
  • Closing

After that, the signature to end the letter. 

Sender’s Address

The sender’s address must be the first thing written in the Informal letter. It should be placed at the top right corner of the page since you would want the recipient to have your address for further communication or reply.

Remember to write your country of residence if you are sending the letter abroad. The Sender’s address contains the following information

  • Number and street name
  • City, state and postal code
  • Country

Hopetown Girls’ School,

Rajawala road,





The date is written below the sender’s address on the right side. As it is an informal letter, you can choose to write the date in any format you like. You can choose to write it in either the American way or British format.

Example: 5th May 2020  


The opening of the informal letter writing begins with a greeting or salutation. You can choose to greet them with abbreviated titles followed by their first name as you hold a personal relationship with the recipient.
You must use the correct title like Mrs (for a married woman), Ms (if an unmarried woman), and Mr for males.

The other way to greet the recipient depending on your closeness with them can be simply using their first name. Some of the common greetings are : 

Dear (first name),
Hello (first name),
Hi (first name),

Be sure to use a comma after the name. 

The greeting is followed by the beginning of the body of the letter. The first line is usually a greeting line. You can choose to write anything you want. Some of the examples of the opening line are :

  • How are you?
  • How is life treating you?
  • How have you been?
  • How are the kids?
  • I hope you are doing well.


The content of the body of the informal letter must be written in an intimate and pleasant tone. You must take care and consider the recipient’s relationship with you and moderate or alter your tone and language accordingly. The best to asses your tone and writing is to think about how you interact with them in real life while talking to them in flesh and blood.

Generally, the body of the informal letter includes,

  • Your reason for writing the letter.
  • Explanation and details of the concerning topic 
  • Concluding remarks 
  • Invite the person to write back

The closing is the end of the informal letter where you conclude the letter with a summarised version and bid goodbye to the reader. Few examples of the closing are,

  • I am looking forward to seeing you.
  • I can’t wait to hear from you.
  • I can’t wait to see you soon.
  • See you soon.
  • I hope to hear from you soon.
  • Give my regards to…
  • Send my love to…
  • I hope you are doing well.


While signing off, maintain a friendly tone and a personal touch wish them the best of the greetings. Few examples are,

  • Best wishes,
  • Best,
  • Kindly,
  • Kind regards,
  • Best regards,
  • Lots of love,
  • Love

After you’ve picked one that suits the overall mood of your letter, sign your name.

Informal Letter Example

Your friend has not fared well in the recent examinations. Write a letter to him/her expressing your concern. Give him/her some advice on how to score better marks and offer to help him/her to improve his/her performance.

It was a great joy to hear from you. I hope this letter finds you in the best of health.

Please do forgive me. I heard that you could not score your best in the recent examination due to the mishappening at your place. It is completely alright and you need not lose hope. You are definitely a very talented and bright student and with a little focus, concentration, and help you will be able to fare well in your upcoming examinations with flying colors.

If you can not stay up late at night, no need to worry as you can get up early in the mornings instead. Early morning is the best time to study. You will every day you wake up with a fresh mind which will help you to easily gain all the knowledge you need. I also suggest you revise the concept and practice maths regularly.
