Why is Shahtoot Dam Important?
The almost $300 million project is a component of the New Development Partnership between India and Afghanistan. On the Maidan River, the Kabul River tributary is the Shahtoot Dam in Afghanistan. In the presence of Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, and Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, Dr. Jaishankar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Hanif Atmar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
This is the second significant dam that India is building in Afghanistan after the India-Afghanistan Friendship Dam [Salma Dam], which was opened in June 2016. The Shahtoot Dam supplies Kabul City with clean drinking water, supplies adjacent villages with irrigation water for farming, repairs the area's current drainage and irrigation system, helps with management and flood control activities, and also gives the area energy.
