Every year, Staff Selection Commission conducts Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam for various posts. According to the notification, the SSC CGL Tier 1 is scheduled to take place in August 2016. Thus, in this article we are providing you important tips to prepare for Economy part of General Knowledge section, that will help you in the SSC CGL selection process.

First, let’s discuss SSC CGL exam pattern

The questions in the test will be objective type. There will be 200 questions in the SSC CGL question paper and candidates will be given 2 Hours to solve the question paper. There will be the following 4 sections in the question paper –


  • Each part is of equal importance so candidates have to focus on each & every part of the exam.
  • It should be noted by candidates that there is Negative Marking of 0.25 Marks in this Exam. So plan for exam according to SSC CGL exam pattern.

Note 2 : To get a call for next phase you need to clear only overall cutoff of the exam, as Banking & Insurance exams the rule of sectional cutoff does not execute here.

General awareness is not something you can expect to master in a day. But from an exam point of view, if you spend time consistently, you can perform well in it in relatively less time as compared to Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning section. This section acquires more importance because this is the only section which can be attempted quickly i.e. in 12-15 minutes and at the same time, decent marks can be scored in this section if prepared well. GK also contains 50 questions of each 1 marks.

Now the questions arises why you should study economics ?

Candidates appearing for SSC CGL 2016 should have the knowledge of basic economy, National income & aggregates, Demand, Supply, Foreign exchange, Economic development, Balance of payment and national and international financial institutions. These are the basic topics of economics which you would have studied in class 12th in micro & macroeconomics.

Candidates need to study economics

  • It holds maximum weightage in general awareness section.
  • Around 3-5 questions are asked from this section.
  • Only subject where you don’t need to put up formulas & tricks or learn vocabulary which will take time, it is easy to learn & score in economics with accuracy.
  • Time saving subject, as it takes 2-3 seconds to answer the economics question.
  • Straight forward question based on definitions & concepts of economy.

Five Year Plans:

When India became an independent country, many questions had arisen in front of the country’s leaders at that time. The British had left the Indian economy handicapped; leaders had the challenges to make country’s economy  strong. A formal model of planning was adopted. The Planning commission was established on 15th March 1950, with Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as the Chairman. The Planning Commission is directly reporting to the Prime Minister of India. Now, it is known as NITI Aayog (National Institute for Transforming India Aayog) and established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st January 2015. The First Five-Year Plan of India was presented by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951.

Previous Year Questions asked in SSC Exams

The biggest truth with SSC is that SSC do repeat questions. Have a look at the last 4-5 year question papers of SSC CGL exams and you will find out that, there are around 2-3 questions in each section which are repeated every time. It is therefore necessary to solve Previous Year Papers.

General Tips: 

  • Read daily newspaper for current updates or Follow online sites for Gk & current affair updates.
  • Solve previous years question paper for more practices & also you can determine the syllabus & difficulty level.
  • Cramming lowers your ability to retain information.
  • Explain your topics to others, it will help you getting clear in your doubts & highlight the area you need to work.

  • Prepare major current affairs of economy and budget then Lucent.
