Consumer Protection Act

- The previous law established a three-tiered system for resolving consumer disputes at the federal (National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission), state, and local levels.
- A consumer is someone who purchases any items or uses a service in exchange for money, according to the Consumer Protection Bill, 2019.
- It excludes anyone who purchases a product for resale or a good or service for profit.
Rights of consumers:
The Bill explains six consumer rights, which include the rights to (i) be shielded from the marketing of goods and services that are dangerous to life and property; (ii) receive information about the quality, potency, quantity, standard, purity, and price of goods or services; (iii) be guaranteed access to a variety of goods or services at reasonable prices; and (iv) seek redress against restrictive or unfair trade practices.
