How to Prepare English for SSC CHSL Tier 1 2019 (Topic-wise) ?

SSC CHSL Tier 1 2019 Exam is going to be conducted in the month of March from 16 to 27th,2020. This article is dedicated to English preparation for SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam. We will discuss the exam pattern, English syllabus, and topics of English section such as Fill in the blanks, Spotting Error, Sentence Correction, Synonyms and Antonyms, Idioms/Phrases & One Word Substitution, Spelling Mistakes, Cloze Test, & Reading Comprehension. Preparation Strategy of English section for SSC CHSL Exam 2019 

SSC CHSL Exam Pattern

SSC CHSL Exam is conducted in two Tiers (Tier 1 and Tier 2). As far as the English section is concerned, it is asked in SSC CHSL Tier I exam only. SSC CHSL Tier-II exam is descriptive. 

  • The time duration of Tier I is 60 minutes for 100 questions. 
  • The exam will be conducted in an online mode.
  • Each question carries 2 marks and there is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.

1. Fill in the blanks

(i) Read the statement carefully and choose the word from the options which is relevant according to the context of the sentence.

(ii) Use the elimination method by going through the options all at once and finding the best answer that fits the context.

(iii) Also, you must ensure that the word you have inserted in the place of the blank enables one to read the sentence smoothly and correctly. These methods will come handy only through practice.

2. Spotting the Error 

As the name suggests, you will be given a sentence and you will have to find the grammatical error in the sentence.  These type of questions requires a good understanding of the grammatical rules. 

Tips to solve Spotting Error Questions in SSC CHSL Exam

(i) In order to solve questions on spotting errors the first step you should take is to read the complete sentence carefully. In most of the cases, you will be able to detect the error easily.

(ii) While reading the entire sentence, you must carefully check the subject-verb agreement.

(iii) If you are not able to detect the error or not sure of the correct answer, then you should read each part of the sentence and try to examine it for possible error.

3. Sentence Correction

In this topic, you have to select an alternative to the erroneous part which may improve the sentence. Sometimes there is no correction required then your answer will be no improvement.

Tips to solve Sentence Correction in SSC CHSL Tier I Exam

(i) As you locate each error, eliminate all of the choices which contain errors.

(ii) Do not read each choice back into the sentence individually; that wastes time and invites inaccuracy.

(iii) Instead, identify the differences among the choices and eliminate those that offer less effective or grammatically incorrect alternatives.

4. Synonyms and Antonyms: 

(i) Vocabulary plays an important role in any competitive examination. In order to improve your vocabulary, you need to read the newspaper on a daily basis and find synonyms and antonyms for every new word learnt.

6. Spelling Mistakes

This is the easiest topic and if you are good with spellings part, you can easily fetch marks. If you are not comfortable with spellings then you can learn some basic rules for spelling errors which will help you in a deep understanding of how words are constructed.

 7. Cloze Test

A passage with 5 blanks is likely to come in SSC CHSL Exam. In this, you are provided with a passage with few blanks and you need to fill these blanks from the given options.

Tips to solve Cloze Test in SSC CHSL Tier I Exam

(i) In the passage, mostly all the sentences are logically related to each other. This logic will give you an idea of the appropriate word for the blank space.

(ii)Try to find the positive and negative words. You will easily be able to fit them in the blanks.

8. Reading Comprehension

Step I: Identify the tone of the paragraph, it helps in answering the questions very quickly and efficiently.

Step II: Read questions first so that you know what you are looking for

Step III: Read the first and last para twice and on a thorough basis.

English is a scoring section of SSC CHSL Exam. You just have to do 3 things to get a good score in English.

1. Improve your Grammar - While talking, reading or writing try to focus on grammar. This will help you in the exam.
