Amid rising environmental concerns because of pollution and climate change, the purpose of World Environment Day is to spread awareness about the threat to the environment and measures that can be taken to tackle this issue. To inspire positive changes in the environment, the first Environment Day was celebrated in 1974.
In 2022, World Environment Day was celebrated on the theme of "Only one Earth" where different Governments, NGOs and citizen joins hands together for the betterment of the environment and to create a sustainable environment for future generations.

World Environment Day is the largest global forum for environmental public outreach, and millions of people around the world celebrate it. According to the World Environment Day official website, the theme of June 5, 2023, will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the theme #Solutions to plastic pollution. Côte d'Ivoire will host this year. The Dutch government is sponsoring World Environment Day this year. The country is one among those taking bold action along the plastic lifecycle. It has signed the Global Commitment to the New Plastics Economy and is a member of the Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter.
History of World Environment Day 2023
World Environment Day has been around since 1974. The concept of World Environment Day has conceived 50 years ago at the Stockholm United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It sprang from the realisation that we must take action to protect the air, land, and water on which we all rely. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, attended the first United Nations Conference on Environment in 1972.
World Environment Day has been observed annually since 1974, and it has grown in importance as a platform for advocating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals' environmental goals. Each year, nearly 150 countries take part in the festivities, which are organised by the UNEP. Environmental causes are championed by large corporations, non-governmental organisations, towns, governments, and celebrities all around the world.

The major goal of World Environment Day is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to remind people that nature should not be taken for granted. According to the United Nations, this day gives a chance to extend the basis for informed opinion and responsible behaviour by communities, businesses, and individuals in the preservation and enhancement of the environment.
