Root Word Series for SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, SSC GD Constable & Other Govt Exams

Hi Friends, we are once again starting a new session on root words all over again due to huge students’ demand. For all the exams, root words have always played a crucial role to learn and memorize words. Many students question the significance of this topic viz. ‘Why should they study root words?', ‘How would studying root words help them in the English subject?’ and a few others. To answer these questions you need to understand the formation of words. Words are formed from languages that include both suffixes and prefixes. The English language is made up of four parts which are Greek root words, Latin root words, French root words, and German root words. To better understand the root word concept let’s take a practical example.

‘Cracy’ is a root word that means government or system. The words which can be formed with this root word include Democracy, Autocracy, Theocracy, Plutocracy, Oligocracy, and a few others. To understand the meaning you can go through the table below:

So, now, we have known the significance of root words viz. by understanding the meaning of one prefix/ suffix of root words, you can recognize the partial/ complete meaning of the whole word even if the word is new to you.
In this root word series, you will go through numerous root words which can help you to multiply your vocabulary.

Today is Day 10 of the root word series. Follow the root word along with their meanings:

‘vale’ as a root means Strength, Worth & Valor

  • Valetude: State of health
  • Valetudinarian: A person who is unduly anxious about their health
  • Valedictory: A farewell address at graduation
  • Valediction: A farewell
  • Valiant: A person who is brave
  • Equivalent: Of equal value
  • Valid: having a sound basis in logic or fact
  • Valorization: Government subsidy for support of the prices of a commodity

'Neo' as a root means New & Recent

  • Neoblastic- Having the nature of new growth
  • Neoprene - Belonging to the tertiary period
  • Neocosmic- Relating to the present known world and races
  • Neocracy- Government by new, inexperienced officials
  • Neo-Darwinism-A new form of Darwin’s theory
  • Neofetus- A new form of Darwin’s theory
  • Neogenesis- A new formation or regeneration of tissue
  • Neogrammarian- A new, scientific direction to linguistics

CHEF: the French word comes from Latin caput (head) and is cognate with English "chief"

  • Achieve: successfully bring about or reach (a desired objective or result) by effort, skill, or courage.
  • Out-Achieving: to achieve more than (someone)
  • Chiefly: mainly
  • Mischief: a specific injury or damage attributed to a particular agent

TEN as a root means “hold”

  • Lieutenant: an assistant with the power to act when his superior is absent
  • Tenure: the holding of an office.
  • Tenet: one of the principles on which a belief or theory is based:
  • Tenant: a person or organization that uses a building or land and pays rent to its owner
  • Tenacity: the quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly; grip
