  • He was born to parents Ramji Maloji Sakpal and Bhimabai Murbadkar Sakpal in Mhow on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh.
  • His original name was Ambavadekar derived from his native village ‘Ambavade’ in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
  • He was the first Indian to pursue a PhD in Economics from abroad.
  • He played a pivotal role in RBI establishment in 1935.

  • He wrote his biography named 'Waiting for a Visa' which is all about his experiences of untouchability since his childhood.
  • He also helped in passing of the Hindu code bill which gave many important rights to the women.
  • He strongly opposed Article 370 of the Indian constitution.
  • he breathed his last on December 6, 1956, in New Delhi.
  • He was awarded India’s highest civilian award the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1990.
  • He asserted the right of Dalits to take water from public water sources through Mahad Satyagraha of 1927.
  • He brought several labour reforms as the member for Labour in the Viceroy’s Council.
  • He was the nation’s first Law Minister.
  • He was also the chairman of the drafting committee to write India's constitution.
