Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: 9 Important Things for Student to Learn From ‘The Missile Man of India’

By PARUL RISHI|Updated : September 24th, 2022

Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam or APJ Abdul Kalam was an Indian scientist and politician who played a leading role in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programs. He served as the president of India from 2002 to 2007.
Kalam was extremely popular during his term and was widely referred to as ‘People’s President’. Kalam was the third President of India to have been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. You will be fascinated to know that Kalam never had a television at home, he mostly listed to radio. Some of the popular books written by Kalam include Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds: Unleashing The Power Within India and Children Ask Kalam, among others.

In this article, we are sharing 9 important things that you can learn from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam:

Set Priorities in Your Life

Kalam didn’t belong to a financially strong family, so he had to sell newspapers in his initial stage of life. He never neglected his studies and gave a dedicated amount of time to his studies. For him, studies were his first priority and then any other work.

Hunger to Learn More

As great leaders are always eager to learn more despite being in any stage of their life so was Kalam. He loved Mathematics as a subject and spent many hours practicing questions of this subject.

Never Say Never Attitude

Kalam wanted to become a pilot. He was in the ninth place and IAF selected only eight candidates at that time. However, that didn’t stop him from pursuing his passion. He was very passionate in whatever he used to do.

Importance of Books

Kalam was a true bibliophile. He never accepted any gifts except books.

Be Humble, even if you are the Head of the Nation

Even after being honoured with many doctorates, awards, he always remained grounded and peace. So, no matter where your life takes you, it is important to always remain grounded and maintain humility at all times. Kalam character tells us that modesty has, and will always remain, an alluring trait because where egoism fails, humility conquers.

Sharing Knowledge

All through his life he never stopped learning and more importantly, he never stopped sharing that knowledge with colleagues and to the youth of the country.

Have a Vision in Life

Vision and strategy to achieve are both very important to lead a successful life. But the question is what comes first? Undeniably, vision. If you have a right and clear vision in your mind, then only you can adopt the right strategy. If you don’t have a clear vision, then no strategy will work for you. This is just same as you are going fast but in wrong direction, then you will reach the wrong place early.
Hence, create a clear vision in your mind, nurture it, work towards it, and then only you can achieve your goal.

Be Prepared for Anything

No matter how much energy, effort and time you put in to achieve your goal, life does not always follow the plan that we have set for ourselves. There will be times life will follow its own course and you have to follow it.
Therefore, you must be prepared for such emergencies and deal with them with the right presence of mind and calmly decide what steps to take next in order to ensure everything falls back on track.

Be Innovative and Think and Act Different to the Problems

Kalam once said “My message, especially to young people is to have the courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed” he emphasized. In a country like ours where lakhs of students are preparing & competing for that one seat of a government job, what’s the probability of you making it through them? It is your mind & thinking that makes all the difference here & not all those hours you’ve spent solving a paper! Dare to think different & identify a technique that sets you apart from the rest.

Here are some of the famous quotations of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam:

  • You have to dream before your dreams can come true
  • If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher
  • To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal
  • Let me define a leader. He must have vision and passion and not be afraid of any problem. Instead, he should know how to defeat it. Most importantly, he must work with integrity
  • Great dreams of great dreamers are always transcended
  • Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow
  • Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success
  • Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work
