Solution:
When the diameter of the cylindrical shell is much greater than the thickness of the plate, the cylindrical shell is referred to as a thin cylinder. Failure of thin cylinders is caused by the development of longitudinal and circumferential stresses only. The radial stress in the cylinder wall is insignificant. Hence, it can be assumed that the radial stress across the thickness of the thin cylinder is zero.
