What is GATE Mechanical Engineering Exam?

GATE Mechanical Engineering exam is a National-level entrance exam held annually. The GATE exam for Mechanical Engineering is conducted every year jointly by either of the IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Roorkee on a rotational basis. 

After the completion of the GATE ME exam, the GATE ME score is released by the officials which stays valid for 2 to 3 years. The applicants can use the score for admissions to Postgraduate courses such as M.Tech, MS, and Ph.D. in various IITs & IISc institutes or to get placed in various PSUs across India. Moreover, candidates can also apply for Post Graduate courses at international colleges such as Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), National University of Singapore (Singapore), Technical University of Munich (Germany), and Aachen University (Germany).

GATE Mechanical Engineering Eligibility Criteria

It is essential to know the GATE ME 2023 eligibility criteria as the exam conducting body usually makes minor changes in the eligibility each year. Here are the eligibility criteria to know before applying online for the GATE examination for Mechanical Engineering. 

  • An applicant studying in the 3rd or final year of any UG degree is eligible to appear for the examination. It follows the pattern of 10+2+3.
  • Candidates who have completed any degree program in Engineering or Technology are eligible to apply in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for International Students

Candidates living in Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were also eligible to apply for the GATE Mechanical engineering exam. However, such candidates must have completed or must be in their final year or the pre-final year of their bachelor’s degree in engineering and technology or equivalent to apply for GATE ME 2023.

IIT Kanpur will release the GATE ME 2023 application form on 30 August 2022. To apply for the GATE ME exam, candidates have to follow the following given steps:

  • Login to the portal.

  • Submit the application form.

GATE ME Exam Pattern 2023

The GATE Mechanical exam pattern is similar to the other disciplines in the exam. This discipline also carries 100 marks distributed among 65 questions based on the officially prescribed syllabus. According to the GATE exam pattern for Mechanical Engineering, the mode of the examination is online, and the question paper carries MCQs, MCQs, and NAT-based questions.

GATE ME Admit Card 2023

Applicants can download the GATE ME admit card from the official website from 3 January 2023. The GATE Mechanical Engineering admit card will be available on the official website. To download the admit card, candidates must log in with their application number/ email ID and date of birth.

The GATE ME result 2023 will be released on the GOAPS portal of the candidate who filled the application form.   • GATE ME notification 2023 was released by IIT Kanpur on 29th July 2022. The organizing committee releases the official notification on their website and candidates will be able to download the notification in pdf format.

  • IIT Kanpur will release the GATE ME eligibility criteria for candidates to know if they could apply for the exam. Candidates in the 3rd year/ final year or who completed the 4 year graduation course in the Mechanical Engineering field can apply for the same.

  • GATE Mechanical Engineering scorecard is used for the purpose of getting admission into the M.Tech course in IITs/ NITs and other premier Indian institutions of India. Moreover, the score is also used for getting a job in an Indian PSU. 

  • Yes, some foreign universities like the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Technical University of Germany, and other renowned universities accept GATE Mechanical Engineering scores for the admission of the candidates in their institution.

  • According to the Mechanical Engineering exam pattern, there will be a total of 65 questions that carry 100 marks. The question paper will have questions of three types- MCQ, MSQ, and NAT-based questions. 

  • The GATE ME syllabus has three major parts:
