The Normalisation of Marks in the GATE ME Exam

It has been believed that "The distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions in all multi-session GATE papers". It is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE is large, and the selection procedure of allocating sessions to candidates is random.

  • Further, in the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude.
  • Based on the above and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at the formula for calculating the normalized marks for the multi-session papers.
  • GATE ME paper will be normalized based on the normalization formula stated on GATE 2023 official website.

𝑴𝒊𝒋: is the actual marks obtained by the 𝒋𝒕𝒉 candidate in the 𝒊𝒕𝒉 session

𝑴̅𝒕𝒈: is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates considering all sessions.

𝑴𝒒𝒈: is the sum of the candidates' mean and standard deviation marks in the paper considering all sessions.

𝑴̅ 𝒕𝒊: is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates in the 𝒊𝒕𝒉 session.

𝑴𝒊𝒒 is the sum of the mean and standard deviation marks of the 𝒊𝒕𝒉 session.
