# What is GATE Score Calculation, How to Calculate GATE score

By Himanshu Bajpai|Updated : April 14th, 2022

IIT Kanpur will conduct the GATE exam in the first week of February for all 29 papers. After the exam, the most raising questions on every student's mind are what is the GATE score calculation, how to calculate the GATE score, how it works, etc. We have worked to find the solution to these questions in the article.

The GATE exam is scheduled in multiple sessions, so the difficulty level of each paper fluctuates. The normalization method is taken into account to get an impartial result, which gives rise to questions like what is GATE score calculation, and how to calculate the score. Let us first grasp the various aspects of the score before understanding how to calculate it in the article with every small detail below.

## What is GATE Marks & GATE Score?

There is a difference between GATE marks and GATE scores. All students keep on searching about what is GATE score calculation, how to calculate scores, but only a few can differentiate between the two terms, so let us move towards the definition.

• Actual GATE marks - The actual GATE marks are the marks a student achieves on paper out of a maximum of 100 marks.
• Normalized GATE marks - Multiple paper sessions are held for GATE examinations in civil and mechanical engineering. As a result, a neutralized score normalization technique is used. It helps bring all applicants to the same level when assessing them.
• GATE score - A student's GATE score is calculated out of 1000 marks. The scores are derived using just the actual marks for papers taken in a single session. The marks are normalized and subsequently into the GATE score for the paper taken in multiple sessions.

## Calculation of Normalized GATE Marks

Every year, due to the large number of applicants who choose ME and CE papers, these two exams are held in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The authorities have developed a process for normalizing GATE marks to be fair to all candidates, so many students face problems with what is score calculation, and how to calculate score. We are sharing the complete formula for calculating the GATE score.

Mij gives the normalization of the jth candidate's marks in the ith session.

Where,

Mij is the candidate's marks scored in the session

Mgt is the average of the candidate's marks overall sessions

Mgq is the sum of the candidate's mean and standard deviation over all sessions

Mti is the candidate's average score in a single session

Miq is the sum of the candidate's mean and standard deviation in a single session

## How to Calculate GATE Score?

If a student has an idea about what is GATE score calculation, how to calculate GATE score they could be confused with the formula terms. The score is calculated using GATE marks. The formula for this is given below.

Where,

M is the marks obtained on single-session and multi-session papers

Mq is the paper's qualifying mark for candidates in the general category.

Mt is the mean of the candidates' marks on the exam

## List of Colleges Which Validate the GATE Score

GATE exam is a master's level entrance test for prestigious institutes like IITs, NITs, government, and private colleges. College lists can be broadly classified as follows, according to institutes that participate in various admission portals:

## GATE Score wise College & PSU List

If a student knows about what is GATE score calculation, how to calculate a GATE score, students get confused about college on the scorecard. As there is no common portal for admission & recruitment in the PG program, top rankers have higher chances of getting more seats in different colleges. According to the GATE score from the past cut-off, an overall view of college & PSU lists is provided here, but it may vary year to year and for specialization.
