City Union Bank (CUB) began as a limited corporation in 1904 under the name “The Kumbakonam Bank Limited”, but it quickly expanded. It is based in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.
In September of 1980, the first branch of City Union Bank outside of Tamil Nadu was founded in Sultanpet, Bangalore, Karnataka. In Andhra Pradesh, branches were opened in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. With effect from December 1987, the bank’s name was changed to ‘City Union Bank Limited’ in order to better reflect the bank’s national image.

According to Reserve Bank of India approvals, Dr. N. Kamakodi, who joined the bank as a Deputy General Manager in June 2003 and later rose through the ranks to General Manager in March 2005, Executive Director in October 2006, and Executive President in January 2011, has been named the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective May 1, 2011.
