Central Banking is an international economic research journal, which annually presents the award to recognize excellence in the central banking community. Central Banking has awarded RBI’s Governor Shaktikanta Das as the 2023 Governor of the Year and the National Bank of Ukraine was conferred with the title of ‘2023 Central Bank of the Year’.

- The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das was honored with the title of ‘Governor of the Year 2023′ by Central Banking in London.
- He was honored for his role in managing inflation and handling India’s banking system during crises like the COVID pandemic and global turmoils.
- While the National Bank of Ukraine was presented with the 2023 Central Bank of the Year.
- Central Banking was recommended RBI’s Governor Shaktikanta Das as Governor of the Year 2023 in March 2023.
- He is the second central bank governor after Raghuram Rajan, who was honored with this title in 2015.
- Under his leadership, RBI has implemented crucial reforms, innovative payment systems, and growth-oriented measures during the pandemic.
- He has been credited for overseeing the project around UPI, and pushing the country on the forefront of the pack of central bank digital currency (CBDC).
All About Shaktikanta Das
- He is a retired IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre from the 1980 batch.
- He was appointed as the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 2018.
- He was also a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
- He has worked as an Economic Affairs Secretary, Revenue Secretary, and Fertilizers Secretary.
- He has also served as India’s Alternate Governor at the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), National Development Bank (NDB), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
- He was also named as India’s Sherpa to the G20 culmination, held in Hamburg in July 2017.
Early Life and Education
- He was born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
- He was schooled at the Demonstration Multipurpose School, Bhubaneswar and obtained bachelor’s (BA) and master’s degrees (MA) in history from the St. Stephen’s College at the University of Delhi.
- He was awarded D.Litt. by Utkal University in 2021.

- RBI’s Governor Shaktikanta Das monthly remuneration stood at Rs 2.50 lakh.
Awards
- In 2020, he was conferred the ‘Central Banker of the Year, Asia-Pacific 2020’ award by the London based magazine-The Banker.
