How Many IPS Officers are Selected Every Year? The number of IPS Officers selected every year depends on the requirements of the state. The authorized strength of IPS officers in India is only 4928. However, many IPS posts are vacant now, and UPSC conducts Civil Services Exam to recruit candidates to fill these vacant positions. The number of IPS officers selected has varied over the years, and the number is not constant.

How Many IPS Officers are Selected Every Year?

The IPS vacancy is one of the most important things that an aspirant must keep in mind, as it has a big impact on deciding the UPSC Cut-off for the Indian Police Service. However, there is no fixed number of IPS officers recruited every year. The total IPS strength is 4928 but 908 are still vacant. Since 2009 approximately 150 IPS officers have been selected through the Civil Services Exam every year. However, since 2020 the number has increased to 200. In 2021 the number of IPS officers vacancy was 200, and below we have provided a category-wise breakup.

Selection Process of IPS Officer

To become an IPS officer candidates must meet the IPS Eligibility criteria, and then clear all stages of the Civil Services Examination i.e UPSC Prelims, UPSC Mains, and the Interview round. The Civil Services Exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Candidates must secure high UPSC Ranks in order to get selected for Indian Police Service.

  • After clearing the IPS Examination, all the IPS officers go through mandatory probationary training at LBSNAA, Mussoorie. Here foundation course is conducted with other civil services recruits for 3 months
  • After that Phase 1 IPS training is conducted at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad for 11 months. Then District Practical Training is conducted for 6 months at the respective cadre.
  • At last, Phase 2 training is conducted at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). After the successful completion of the training period, officers are confirmed in the Indian Police Service.

IPS Selection Apart from UPSC CSE

  • IPS officers are selected through three different modes. The Civil Services Exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission is the first mode of IPS selection.
  • IPS officers are also selected through Limited Competitive Exam conducted by UPSC. However, it is very rare.
  • State Police Service officers get promoted to Indian Police Service officers as well.

Increase in IPS Officer Selection

The number of IPS officers selected has been increased from 150 to 200. Since 2009, 150 officers have been recruited through the UPSC exam every year, but it has increased to 200 since UPSC CSE 2020. The government is taking prompt action in the Promotion quota to fill up the IPS officer vacancies in the country. The increment in the IPS officer recruitment is great news for the candidates who aspire to become IPS officers. In this way, more candidates will get an opportunity to fulfill their dream of becoming IPS officers and serving their nation.
