IPS Educational Qualification

Besides the age limit, candidates must meet the educational qualification to apply for the IPS exam. As per the IPS eligibility criteria, the educational qualifications to become an Indian Police Service officer (IPS full form) are as follows:

  • Those who are graduated from a government-recognized university or have an equivalent qualification can apply for the exam.

IPS Selection Process

IPS full form is the Indian Police Service, and the exam conducted to recruit IPS officers is known as the UPSC CSE exam. The exam is conducted annually by Union Public Service Commission, popularly known as UPSC. UPSC conducts Civil Services Exam in three stages- Prelims, Mains and Personality Test. Those who clear all three stages of UPSC CSE and medical tests are recruited as IPS officers by the government.

IPS Exam Prelims

The UPSC Prelims is the screening test to find eligible candidates for the next two stages of the exam. The marks secured in this exam won’t be considered for the final result-making. Those who aspire to become IPS officers must clear this first round.

UPSC Prelims include two papers- General Studies-1 and General Studies-2 (CSAT). It is advised that candidates must go through the UPSC Prelims Syllabus and CSAT Syllabus to analyze the important topics in the UPSC Prelims exam and shape their preparation accordingly. Candidates should know that the CSAT is qualifying in nature, which requires 33% to qualify. On the other hand, the marks secured in the General Studies 1 will be considered for the merit list.

IPS Exam Mains

This is the second stage of the UPSC Exam, and those who clear Prelims will be able to appear for UPSC Mains. It is a descriptive exam that comprises 9 papers. Out of these 9 papers, two are optional subjects and will be chosen by the candidates. There are a total of 48 optional subjects to choose from.

This stage is highly imperative because the marks secured in this exam will be considered for the final result-making. Candidates need to analyze the UPSC Mains Syllabus properly and kickstart their preparation.

IPS Officer Personality Test

The personality Test, or the Interview round, is the last stage of the UPSC Exam. Those who clear the Mains get e-summon letters for the interview stage. The UPSC interview is conducted at the Dholpur House, New Delhi. In this round, selected candidates will be interviewed by the Board members.
