IBPS PO is one of the most sought after exams of the country. The prelims exam is over and now the IBPS PO Mains exams will be conducted on November 28, 2020. Data Analysis & Interpretation (Quantitative Aptitude) is a major part of IBPS PO Exam. Let us now have a look at the strategy that should be followed in Quantitative Aptitude section for IBPS PO Mains Exam 2020.
Data Analysis & Interpretation Preparation for IBPS PO Mains 2020
We have already discussed the Syllabus of IBPS PO Mains 2020 in depth. Make sure that you go through it. You'll come across the below-mentioned pattern in IBPS PO exam.
|Name of Subject||Number of Questions||Maximum Marks||Time allotted for each section|
|Reasoning & Computer Aptitude||45||60||60 minutes|
|English Language||35||40||40 minutes|
|Data Analysis and Interpretation||35||60||45 minutes|
|General Awareness (with special reference to Banking)||40||40||35 minutes|
As clearly mentioned in the pattern, 35 questions would be asked in this section and you will have to finish this section in 45 minutes. Let us have a look at the individual topics and the order in which you should attempt them.
As the name suggests, Data Analysis & Interpretation comprises of the major chunk of D.I and Data Sufficiency questions. Now, the level of DI is higher in Mains exam as applications of Arithmetic topics is used in it.
If you have a look at the analysis of the previous year exam i.e, IBPS PO Mains 2019 exam analysis, 4 sets of DI were asked which included Double Bar Graph, Double table missing, time and work-based caselet and one another and Caselet DI. A major portion of this section would be covered by Data Interpretation, hence a thorough practice of this topic is advisable. The questions of this topic are mainly based on the following arithmetic chapters -
If the basics of these topics are clear, attempting DI questions becomes quite easy. You just need sufficient practice to have a good hold over this topic. The questions may be asked from the following DI graphs -
- Pie Charts
- Line Charts
- Bar Graphs
- Tabular Charts
- Mixed Graphs
- Paragraph or Caselet DI
- Missing DI
You can go through the link below to have a clear understanding of the basics of this topic -

Beside this, you may also encounter Missing or Caselet DI in the exam. Missing D.I. is specific types of data presentation where the data is represented mostly in the form of the table and some data are missing in the table. In these types of questions, all data are related to each other and on the basis of one data, you have to find missing data and then solve the questions asked. While attempting these questions, try to understand the various condition of missing DI table and the try to find the relation between data in missing D.I on the basis of the condition. As far as caselet DI is concerned, it is simply a piece of information presented in the form of a paragraph. Tables or graphs are not provided in these questions. While attempting a caselet DI, try to arrange the information provided in the question in a tabular form. This would simplify your question to a great extent and attempting it would be easy.
These questions basically comprise of a series of numbers which are all connected to each other logically. Once you have identified this pattern, solving the question becomes very simple. You may encounter series based on following –
- Prime Numbers
- Square/Cube Series
- Difference based Series
- Alternate term series
- Multiplication or Division Series
- Series involving the combination of arithmetic functions
This topic is comparatively less time consuming and at the same time scoring. You just need to carefully observe the pattern. You can go through the link below to find out details of number series.
In IBPS PO Mains 2017 and IBPS PO Prelims 2018, this topic was asked. There are chances that either this topic will not be asked or high-level Number Series will be asked.
This is another topic which is most expected in IBPS PO mains exam 2020. In this topics, It just requires your understanding of the various arithmetic topics. The best part of this topic is "you do not have to solve to complete question". As the name suggests, you just have to figure out what statements is/are required to answer the given question. Now, let's have a look at the approach you should follow while solving these questions.
In IBPS PO Mains, last years' papers few questions were asked from this topic. You must practice questions of this topic to score well in the exam.

Quantity Based/Inequality Problems
These types of questions were introduced last year in the exam. They are asked in SBI PO, Clerk 2018 & IBPS PO Prelims 2018. There are high chances that they will be asked in IBPS PO Mains 2020 too. Now, to master this section, you must practice arithmetic questions a lot. In this, two quantities are given, you have to find the relation between two quantities.
You’ll be given two equations of two different variables and you’ll need to establish a relationship between the two. Most of the equations can be solved easily by factorization, however, if that is not possible, you be aware of the following formula to evaluate the value of the variable.
- The quadratic equation is easy for those who are well aware with its concepts.
- In questions of this topic, we have to choose one of the following options in the exam-
- i)x>y ( It means x is greater than y and also it means y is smaller than x)
ii) x<y ( It means y is greater than x and also it means x is smaller than y)
iii)x>= y ( It means x is greater than and equal to y)
iv)x<=y ( It means y is greater than and equal to x)
v)x=y or no relation can be established.
- After solving the equations, deduce the result and choose the right option very carefully. Sometimes students solve the equations correctly but select the wrong option.

Following topics may be asked under the miscellaneous questions –
- Profit and loss
- Simple Interest and Compound Interest
- Ratio and Proportion
- Time and Work
- Time, Speed and Distance
- Boats and Streams
- Mixtures and Alligations
5 Questions were asked from this topic in IBPS PO Mains 2019 exam. Prepare these topics well as they are important to score high in the exam. Also, they are asked in the data interpretation, data sufficiency, and quantity based problems. Go through the study notes of all the topics given below and practice regularly to gain more marks.
Simplification/Approximation simply requires a final answer for a complex calculation. Simplification questions are asked to check the ability of a student to deal with numbers. Whenever an expression with multiple arithmetic operations is given, follow the BODMAS principle for calculating the final result. Rather than calculating the exact value in terms of decimals, calculate the approximate values and then perform the operations. You can go through the link below to understand the basics of this topic better -

Go through the calculation short tricks from this link
Try to attempt these questions after you are done with the first three topics since these are individual questions (unlike DI which are in sets) and hence may be comparatively time taking. Brush up your basics of the topics mentioned above to get a good score in this section.
There are very less chances that directly Simplification/Approximation questions will be asked. But you must practice them to strengthen your calculation skills.
Try to attempt the following questions first, since they are less time-consuming -
1. Number Series
2. Simplification / Approximation
3. Quadratic Equations/Quantity Based Problems
4. Data Interpretation (Ratio, Average and percentage based)
5. Data Sufficiency problems
After that, if the time permits, you can move to the miscellaneous questions.
Keep in mind the following -
- As far as this section is concerned, Speed plays a vital role since questions are normally lengthy and so you need to take utmost care of the time you are spending on each question.
- Try to attempt all the questions with 100% accuracy that will enhance your marks and save time.
- Try to practice as many mock tests as you can. This will help you work on your speed, accuracy and time management.
- Make sure you evaluate your performance after every mock tests to identify the sections you are lagging at.
- Attempt the questions calmly. If you panic by looking at the length or the language of the question, you are bound to make mistakes and waste precious time.
