What is Group X & Y Exam in Indian Air Force?
- Indian Air Force Group X & Y are the personnel below officer rank in the Indian Air Force also known as Airmen.
- The Indian Air Force conducts the Group X & Y exam for the selection of airmen into the Indian Air Force.
- Indian Air Force Group X & Y is a national level examination which is conducted twice a year, first in March and next in September.
- This exam is conducted for young undergraduates who are looking for an opportunity to join the Indian Air Force.
The exam is only applicable for Male candidates who are selected in the following branches/trades:
1. Group X (Technical Trade):
- Students who have passed/appeared in 10+2 with Physics and Maths are eligible for Group X trade.
- Their work profile includes maintenance of all fields related to Aircraft, ground systems, etc.
2. Group Y (Non-Technical Trade):
- Students who have passed/appeared in 10+ 2 in any stream are eligible for Group Y trade.
- Their work profile includes all work other than technical like logistics, administration, accounts, etc.
Indian Air Force Group X & Y Eligibility Criteria 2023
The Indian Air Force recruits Airmen in Group X & Group Y for the next course. The IAF has invited online applications for unmarried male citizens of India & Nepal. Below are the eligibility criteria for various entries under the Tour of Duty scheme. Make sure interested male candidates must fulfil the entire Indian Air Force Group X Y eligibility criteria. Candidates failing to fulfil the Indian Air Force Group X Y eligibility criteria 2023 will not be allowed to participate in the recruitment process.
Nationality:
- A candidate should be a citizen of India.
- Nepalese male candidates are also eligible.
Air Force Age Limit Criteria:
- Only the candidates born between 29 December 1999 and 29 June 2005 (both days inclusive) are eligible to apply for Indian Air Force Group X Y 2023 recruitment.
- In some cases, where a candidate clears all the selection stages, the upper age limit as of the date of enrolment is 23 years.

Note: –
Candidates eligible for the Group ‘X’ examination (based on the percentage of intermediate/10+2) are also eligible for Group Y and would have the choice of appearing for both Group X and Group Y exams. This choice can be mentioned while completing the online registration form.
The aggregate percentage of marks mentioned before the decimal will be considered. The rounding off of marks/percentages is not allowed. That means, 49.99% will not be considered 50%.
Medical Standards:

Note: Permanent tattoos on the body are not permitted in the military, however, tattoos on the inner face of the forearms, back/reverse side of the palm, and cultural & tribal tattoos may be considered.
Indian Air Force Group X & Y Salary and Career Growth
During their service, airmen earn a reasonable wage and other advantages along with the proper promotion. Airmen obtain many advantages such as housing, ration, self, and dependent medical services, self and family LTC, education loans, interest-free home repair or sister/daughter wedding loans, children’s scholarships, etc.
Indian Air Force Group X & Y Salary
Group X and Y employees are referred to as PBOR (person below the rank of officer) or airmen. Group X Airmen will operate in the technical areas subject to their business while Group Y airmen will work in non-technical streams such as Logistics, Administration, Accounts, etc.
The posts are- Airframe Fitter, Propulsion Fitter, Weapon Fitter, Electrical Fitter, Electronic Fitter, Mechanical Fitter, Automotive Fitter, and Workshop Fitter in Group X’s technical trades.
On the other hand, Group Y’s non-technical posts are- Accounts Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Logistics Assistant, Operation Assistant, Medical Assistant, IAF Police & Security, Ground Training Instructor, Environmental Support Services Assistant, Meteorological Assistant, Musician, and Cryptographer.
During training, Airmen get a stipend of ₹ 14,600 in both groups. Once the training is complete, ₹ 33,100 per month is given to Group X airmen. Group Y airmen receive ₹ 26,900 per month. In addition to this Dearness Allowance is also provided.
The Dearness Allowance is based on the complete amount of Pay Band + Grade Pay + MSP. Military Service Pay (MSP) is paid every month to all airmen. Thus, now you must be clear with the salary of Indian Air Force Officers.
Other Allowances: In addition to the above, various allowances such as Transport Allowance, Composite Personal Maintenance Allowance (CPMA), Leave Ration Allowance (LRA), High Altitude Allowance, Field Area/
Modified Field Area Allowance, House Rent Allowance (HRA), Children Education Allowance/ Hostel Subsidy, etc., shall also be admissible from time to time as applicable.
Perks: Perks such as ration, clothing, medical facilities, accommodation, CSD (Canteen) facilities, leave (60 days annual and 30 days casual or as per the terms and conditions at the time of enrolment in a calendar year as a privilege, subject to service exigencies), Recreational facilities, Transport facility for school going children and Leave Travel Concession (LTC) shall also be provided as per the existing rules. Also, Group Insurance Cover of Rs. 50 Lakhs at a premium of Rs. 3200/- per month for all airmen.
Indian Air Force Group X & Y Career Growth
With time and experience, Airmen get promoted to higher ranks during their tenure in the Indian Air Force. Serving Airmen can apply for selection as a Pilot in the Flying Branch if he is within the age group of 19 to 24 years. In addition, Serving Airmen can also apply for the post of Ground Duty Branches as an Officer (other than Medical).
The promotion policy in Indian Air Force is based on the following Criterion:
- Annual Appraisal Report (AAR):
The Annual Appraisal Report is the report that is compiled for each personnel of Airmen by the Superior Officer under whom he works.
- Promotion Exams:
In addition to AAR, the Airmen also need to clear promotional exams. These exams are necessary for the promotion of Airmen. These exams test the knowledge of Airmen on Indian Air Force Laws & Service Practices, Administration, Military History, and Professional Knowledge.
- Minimum service:

Phase 1: Online Test
The online test of Indian Air Force Group X comprises a total of 70 Questions of one mark each with a duration of 60 minutes. The Group Y Paper comprises a total of 50 Questions of one mark each with a duration of 45 minutes.
The candidates who appear for both Group X & Y need to appear for a paper that consists of a total of 100 questions, the total time duration is 85 minutes.

The Admit Card for the Indian Air Force Group X & Y Phase 2 examination can be downloaded under the candidates login and the following documents are required:
- NOC and 4 self-attested photocopies from the employer for those who are presently serving in government organizations.
- HB Pencil, Eraser, Glue stick, Stapler, and Blue/Black Ball Point Pen.
- Original Phase 1 admit card used during Phase 1 testing which has a seal of Indian Air Force & invigilator’s sign.
- 8 copies of unattested recent (which was used for the online application registration) color passport size photograph.
- 4 self-attested photocopies of NCC ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ certificate along with Original Copy.
- 4 self-attested photocopies of 10+2/Intermediate/Equivalent Examination Marksheet & passing certificate.
- Printout for phase II of the Admit Card.
- Duly filled application form & color print out.
The procedure of Phase 2 of Indian Air Force Group X & Y:
Candidates should have the above-mentioned papers to determine the prima-facie eligibility when appearing for the selection test to be scrutinized/verified before the beginning of Phase 2.
Candidates who pass the Online Test and are selected on a specified date on the CASB Web Portal will be called on designated Airmen Selection Center for Physical Fitness Test (PFT) consisting of 1.6 kilometres to be finished within 06 minutes and 30 seconds.
Candidates will also have to complete a minimum of 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and 20 squats for qualifying in the Physical Fitness Test within the specified moment.
Note: It is recommended that candidates take their sports shoes and shorts/track pants.
Adaptability Test 1: (Applicable for both Group X & Y):
All applicants who clear the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will be required to undergo Adaptability Test 1 (objective type – written test) to evaluate the suitability of the candidate for the Indian Air Force job role which involves deployment in different geographical terrain, climate, and operational circumstances.

All applicants passing the Adaptability Test 1 must undertake the Adaptability Test-2 by the current policy. Adaptability Test 2 is designed to select applicants who can adapt to the Indian Air Force setting and adapt to the military lifestyle.
Medical Exam:
Candidates qualifying for the Adaptability Test 2 will be awarded at the corresponding ASCs with a letter of the medical appointment. It can also be downloaded for medical examination at the designated Medical Boarding Center (MBC) on a specified date under CASB internet portal. Indian Air Force Medical Team shall conduct the medical examination by IAF medical norms.
Following are the tests that are conducted during the medical exam:
- Haemoglobin –
- Urine
- Biochemistry
- Blood Sugar
- Urea, Uric acid
- X-Ray
- ECG
- Serum Cholesterol
Some general guidelines that are needed to be taken care of:
- Candidates must mention 5 choices of examination in the order of preference while filling out the application form. However, CASB has the right to allot and center than those mentioned in the application.
- Requests for a change of exam date shall not be entertained.
- Duplicate / Incomplete / Applications filled incorrectly shall be dismissed.
- Candidates should be ready to remain under their agreement for the entire length of the exams. No TA/DA is eligible.
- If a candidate completes all phases of the selection procedure, the upper age limit will be 21 years as of the date of enrolment.
- The candidacy of applicants applying more than once in response to this advertisement shall be rejected.
Provisional Select List (PSL):
The incorporation of candidate names in the PSL relies on the applicant’s performance in the selection exam and the same is determined by applying the cut off marks against the number of skilled candidates in stage 2 testing and expected vacancy.
Enrolment List:
A separate letter of the call shall be sent to the applicants requested for registration.
