ESE IES officer Recruitment Process
There are three stages of recruitment to the post of an IES officer -
- The Preliminary Exam.
- The Mains Exam.
- Interview or Personality Test.
We shall be looking at each stage one by one below -
ESE IES officer: Preliminary Exam
ESE/IES Prelims marks are used for shortlisting the candidate for ESE Mains Stage as well as these marks are carried forward for the final selection of the Candidate. In this regard, it can be easily observed that Paper 1 marks play a very crucial role in the selection of Engineering Services. The preliminary examination is basically divided into two sections:
- General Ability (GA) section.
- Engineering Branch Section.

The candidate who clears the Prelims Exam is eligible to appear for Mains Examination and who clears the mains will be eligible for an interview.
ESE IES officer: Mains Exam
The Mains Exam Pattern is as follows:

The candidates who will clear the Mains Exam are eligible to appear for the Interview.
ESE IES officer: Interview (Personality Test)
The interview focuses on the personality of the candidate and the Technical knowledge he/she possesses. The interview consists of 200 marks and the final selection of the candidate is done based on the aggregate of the marks obtained in Prelims, Mains and Interview.

The Paper 1 syllabus which consists of General Studies & Engineering Aptitude was newly introduced by the UPSC in 2017 and till now three phases of ESE examination is conducted by the UPSC, Since the syllabus is very vast you need to cover each and every topic well in time to excel in the exam.

IES Preparation Study Plan 2022
Before starting preparation, it is essential to make a proper study plan and strategy to clear the examination. Here we are providing you with some valuable and practical IES Preparation Study plan 2022 to help you crack the IES examination:
1. Pay Attention to Technical Subjects
To clear IES 2022 examination, it is essential to start preparing pretty early. It is advisable to begin preparing for engineering services while seeking your graduation. It will help you learn every subject in detail; you can easily cover most of the topics in your graduation years. Just remember not to skip any case and try to clear your concepts. A basic understanding of subjects is fundamental and helps a lot in your preparation process.
2. Solve IES Previous Year's Papers
Proper investigation of last year's papers also plays a vital role in cracking the IES 2022 examination. Accumulate the past ten years question papers and IES 2022 Sample Papers and go through them one by one. Pick the most repeatedly asked topics and questions and pay extra awareness to them to help you score nicely in ESE examinations. Also, try to observe the pattern of the question paper and schedule consequently.
3. Make Subject Wise Notes
Pick the IES 2022 syllabus and start learning subject wise. Select the most helpful book according to the syllabus. Pick 2-3 subjects and give 2 hours to each subject regularly. It will help you to cover and to understand the topics quite well. And yes, while studying, it is essential to make notes. Make notes on important issues; write down formulas and tricks separately. These notes will enable you to revise the topics before the examination.
4. Develop a Reading Habit
To prepare for General English, you can start with reading grammar books, learn the usage of words, build your vocabulary, learn parts of speeches and tenses. Take the help of English newspapers and magazines, as it will also help you improve your English and increase your vocabulary. You can also take help with English online tests. Developing a habit of reading will help you a lot to clear this section. Also, work on your communication skills, both verbal & Written.
5. Learn Time Management
Along with setting targets, time administration plays a vital role to clear any examination. Time is a significant factor while taking the exam. Don't stick to lengthy questions. If you have doubts and confusion about any question, leave it and move to the next one. Try to save as much time as you can. Also, improve your reading and writing speed. Rehearse at home so that you can do well in examinations also. Solve at least 4-5 practice sets in a day. It will help you to have better time control.
6. Daily routine:
- Morning 6 am - 2 pm: Go for Coaching classes or if you are preparing through self, then study Technical or Non - Tech new topics
- 3 pm - 4:30 pm: Revise everything taught in class and practise questions based on these topics. Make short notes also.
- 5 pm - 8:30 pm - Revision of previously done subjects. Revision of short notes if required. Keep revising earlier subjects to retain in memory.
- 9 pm - 11 pm- Revision of class questions of revised subjects and last year questions too.
- 11 pm- 12 am - Revision of one of the Prelims paper one subject.
- 12 am - 5:30 - Take a Good Sleep
- Repeat
7 . The main purpose is to keep revising what is done on daily basis to retain the memory of the same. Make short notes for the same and keep doing last year papers for that.
