Shear Centre is also known as Centre of Twist. The point on a cross-section where any shear stress may be applied without creating twisting in the section is known as the shear center. The section won’t twist if the external stress passes through the shear center, which prevents this from happening. If external pressures are applied to an unsymmetrical section at the centroid or any other place (other than the shear center), twisting in addition to bending is generated. It is important for the force to act through a certain location to prevent twisting and only cause bending (which may not coincide with the centroid).

## Shear Centre, Also Known as Center of What?

Shear Centre is also known as Centre of Twist. The location on the beam section where a load is applied without causing twisting is known as the shear center. The outcome of internal forces flows through the shear center. The shear center is the section’s center of gravity for symmetrical sections. When a portion of a thin-walled beam is exposed to pure shear, the shear center serves as the center of rotation.

### Properties of Shear Centre:

The following are the properties of the Shear Centre.

• The torsion of a thin-walled beam is not caused by the transverse force exerted at the shear center.
• When a portion of a thin-walled beam is subjected to pure torsion, the shear center serves as the center of rotation.
• If a thin-walled beam is exposed to pure shear, the shear center is where shear flows produce force.
