By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: September 25th, 2023

Prokaryotic cells are unicellular whereas eukaryotic cells are both unicellular and multicellular. Nucleus is absent in prokaryotic cells whereas nucleus is present in eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cell has only one chromosome whereas eukaryotic cell has more than one chromosomes.

Prokaryotic cells

Prokaryotic cells lack a proper nucleus and organelles that are attached to membranes.

Eukaryotic cells

Eukaryotes are types of cells that have membrane-bound organelles and a nucleus.

Major Difference Between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

Prokaryotic cell

Eukaryotic cell

All prokaryotic cells are monocellular.

Eukaryotic cells come in both single and many cell types.

There is no nucleus. They have a nucleoid area in the cell, instead.

There is a nucleus. The nucleus is enclosed by the nuclear membrane.

There is only one chromosome present.

There are multiple chromosomes.

Organelles with membrane ties are absent.

Organelles connected to membranes are present.

Only 70S ribosomes are present.

In eukaryotes, there are 70S and 80S ribosomes.

Binary fission or budding are two methods of cell division.

Meiosis and mitosis are both used for cell division.

Peptidoglycan makes up the cell wall.

In plants and fungi, the cell wall is composed of chitin rather than cellulose.

In prokaryotes, asexual reproduction occurs.

Eukaryotes are capable of sexual and asexual reproduction via meiosis and gamete fusion, respectively.

The flagella have a more compact and basic structure.

The structure of the flagella is more intricate and bigger.

Examples- Bacteria and Archaea

Examples – Plant and animal cells.

Summary:-

What is the Difference Between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells?

Eukaryotic cells are both unicellular and multicellular, in contrast to prokaryotic cells, which are monocellular. Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus, whereas eukaryotic cells have a nucleus. Eukaryotic cells have several chromosomes, whereas prokaryotic cells only have one.
