Vorticity of a Fluid is Equal to

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: September 25th, 2023

Vorticity of fluid is equal to the curl of the flow velocity. It may be non-zero even when all particles are flowing along straight and parallel pathlines. It is a vector field, which gives a microscopic measure of the rotation in the fluid at any point.

Answer: Vorticity of fluid is equal to the curl of the flow velocity.

It describes the local spinning motion of a continuum near some point. With the help of Vorticity, the velocity vector changes when one moves by an infinitesimal distance in a perpendicular direction to it. It is associated with flow circulation along a closed path by Stokes’ theorem.

A line that is everywhere tangent to the local vorticity vector is called a vortex line or vorticity line. Vortex flux is the same everywhere along the tube as the vorticity has zero divergence. Extension of vortex line leads to intensified vorticity.

Summary:

Vorticity of a Fluid is Equal to

Mathematically, the Vorticity of fluid is equal to the curl of the flow velocity. The development of the vorticity field is elucidated by the vorticity equation.
