Answer: D. Whole to the part

The main principle of surveying is to work from the whole to the part.

Solution

To carried out survey work two fundamental principles is used which are as follows:

Location of a point: To locate a new point there is at least two observations are required. It can be both angular measurements or both linear measurements or one angular and one linear measurement.

Working from whole to part:

  • Working from whole to part means first a large area is covered in surveying to establish control points with a higher degree of precision after that surveying is carried out within this area.
  • Working from whole to part minimises the occurrence of error.
  • Working from whole to part leads to compensating the errors which are made in observation within the whole defined area. Hence, the main principle of surveying is to work from the whole to the part.

Note: Working from part to whole is not any kind of principle used in surveying as it leads to accumulating errors.
