PhD Not Mandatory for Assistant Professor: Researchers who already qualified for NET but do not have a PhD degree must be breathing a sigh of relief across the country, as per the latest notic of UGC, the candidates do not need a PhD Degree to apply for the post of Assistant Professor all over India. As a result, candidates having an M.Sc degree with the National Eligibility Test (NET) qualification will continue to be the minimum eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor in a university or college.

What is the Notification Released By the University Grants Commission (UGC)?
The chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), M. Jagadesh Kumar, stated that a PhD is not necessary for hiring assistant professors in central universities. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed UGC-HRDC building on the Osmania University (OU) campus, Kumar added that a qualification in the Commission’s National Eligibility Test (NET) would be sufficient for it.
The choice has been made to allow professionals without PhDs to be appointed as assistant professors at Indian universities. The action also aims to give opportunities to experts who want to teach in universities but are unable to do so because they lack a PhD.
According to M. Jagadesh Kumar, a one-nation, one-data portal is being created that will provide candidates with access to all UGC guidelines and other crucial information. Kumar added that starting in the following academic year, the National Digital University will offer quality instruction directly to students.

Earlier Process of Assistant Professor Hiring
Earlier, the Central government changed the Commission’s rules so that a PhD was now the minimal requirement for hiring assistant professors. The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the new regulations from going into effect in 2021 to 2022. Media reports suggest that it later got extended till July 2023. However, hiring continued based on UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) scores in the interim.
