  1. -2
  2. +1
  3. +2
  4. -1

The oxygen in O2 F2 has an oxidation number of 1. The total number of electrons that an atom gains or loses in the process of joining with another atom to form a chemical bond is referred to as the oxidation number. An oxidation state is another term for it.

Oxidation Number of Oxygen

  • A substance’s oxygen oxidation number is typically -2.
  • However, there are a few outliers.
    • Each oxygen atom in peroxides (such as H O and Na O) is given an oxidation number of -1.
    • Each oxygen atom in superoxides (such as KO and RbO) is given the oxidation number -(12).
    • The oxidation number of oxygen difluoride (OF) is +2.
    • Oxygenation number +1 describes dioxygen difluoride (O F).

However, it will now only be a positive number, and the number assigned to oxygen will depend on its bonding state.

  1. In its free or uncombined state, each atom in an element has an oxidation number of zero. Evidently, each atom in H2, O2, Cl2, Na, Mg, and Al holds the oxidation number zero.
  2. The charge on ions made up of only one atom is the same as the oxidation number. The Na+ ion has an oxidation number of 1, Mg2+ has a number of 2, Fe3+ has a number of 3, and so on.
  3. The oxidation numbers of all alkali metals and alkaline earth metals in their compounds are +1 and +2, respectively. It is believed that all of aluminum’s compounds have an oxidation number of +3.
  4. Hydrogen’s oxidation number is +1 unless it is bonded to metals in binary compounds (compounds containing two elements). All of the compounds that contain fluorine have an oxidation number of one. Examples include LiH, NaH, and CaH2.
  5. Other halogens (Cl, Br, and I) also have an oxidation number of -1 when they are present as halide ions in their compounds. Oxygen reacts with chlorine, bromine, and iodine to create oxoacids and oxoanions, which have positive oxidation numbers.

Summary:-

In O2 F2 the Oxidation Number of Oxygen is – 1. -2 2. +1 3. +2 4. -1

The oxidation number of oxygen is + 1 in O2 F2.. The number of electrons received or lost by an atom while forming the chemical bond is the oxidation number
