Updated on: September 25th, 2023 The shape factor for a rectangular section is:

1. 2.0
2. 1.5
3. 1.34
4. 1.8

Table of content ## The shape factor for a rectangular section is 1.5.

Solution

Shape factor is defined as the ratio of plastic moment capacity to its yield moment capacity.

Shape factor=Plastic moment capacity/Yield moment capacity

Shape factor represents the strength of a section after its yielding.

SF=MP/My=ZPfy/Zefy=ZP/Ze

Where ZP and Ze are the plastic section modulus and elastic section modulus of the section respectively.

Value of shape factor for the different sections:

 Section Shape factor Triangular Section 2.34 Rectangular Section 1.5 Solid circular section 1.7 Thin hollow tube 1.27

Note: More value of shape factor represents that section can withstand more stresses after its yielding.  Hence, the shape factor for a rectangular section is 1.5.
