Lysimeter is used to measure-

  1. Infiltration
  2. Evaporation
  3. Vapour pressure
  4. Evapotranspiration

Answer. Option D. Evapotranspiration

Lysimeter is used to measure evapotranspiration.

Infiltration: It is the movement of water through the soil’s surface and into a porous medium while being affected by pressure and gravity. The soil type, including its texture, structure, hydrodynamic properties, which affect capillary forces and adsorption, and soil coverage, are the elements that affect infiltration.

Evaporation: In this process, through the passage of heat energy, a liquid transforms into a gaseous state at the free surface below the boiling point.

Vapour pressure: The pressure that a vapour exerts in a closed system when they are in thermodynamic equilibrium with its condensed phases (solid or liquid)  is known as vapour pressure.

Evapotranspiration: It is the process by virtue of which water exits a living plant’s body and enters the atmosphere as water vapour.

A lysimeter is used to measure the exact quantity of evapotranspiration that plants release (usually crops or trees). The amount of water lost to evapotranspiration can be calculated by keeping track of the amount of precipitation that a region receives and the amount lost through the soil. Lysimeters are of two types namely weighing and non-weighing.
