DU Notification 2022 : M.Phil Discontinues from Next Academic Session

The Delhi University has released a notification for the announcement of the discontinuation of the M.Phil Course from the next academic session (2022-23) in line with the National Education Policy (NEP). The decision taken will reorient the different DU programmes according to the National Education policy issued in the year 2020.

DU 2022 Notification: Discontinuation of M.Phil from the Next Session

The Delhi University has released the notification to discontinue offering the M.Phil course from the next academic session of 2022-23. The authorities took this decision to reorient the various programmes offered in the university according to the National Education policy released in 2020. Several other universities are looking forward to making decisions regarding the reorientation of the courses in the line of NEP. The Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) also discussed scrapping the M.Phil Courses last year. Currently, DU offers the PhD and M.Phil Programmes through 52 departments all total. There were seas vacant for 34 departments offering PhD and M.Phil last year. 

DU Notification 2022: The Reason For The Discontinuation Of M.Phil

The decision of the Discontinuation in the M.Phil Programme in Delhi University is taken in accordance with the NEP 2020. According to the new education policy that was released in 2020, the higher education institutes will have an access to offer a master programme of 2 years to the students with the 3 years of graduation degree. The 2 years of the master programme will have the last year fully focused on the research. However, the students with a 4 year of graduation degree will have to pursue a master degree in a 1-year programme. The students will have to have either a 4-year graduation degree or a master’s degree to pursue a PhD.

The professors have described their opinion with the word ‘Unfortunate’ on the action taken by the Delhi University for the discontinuation of M.Phil. According to the professors of the Delhi University, the M.Phil Course is an opportunity for the students to expose themselves to short term research work and puts a really great impression on their CVs. The professors also focused on the points where they discussed the M.Phil being an affordable degree for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The research says that the students who had M.Phil degrees have a better performance record in their PhD.
