The effective atomic number of copper (Z = 29) in [Cu(NH3)4]2+ is 35.
Effective Atomic Number (EAN)
The total amount of electrons revolving around the main metal atom in a complex is what is meant by this term.
The following equation can be used to get the effective atomic number:
EAN = Z – X + (2 x Y)
Where
X = oxidation number
Y = coordination number
Z = atomic number
Step 1: Given,
Chemical complex = [Cu(NH3)4]2+
Coordination number = 4
Atomic number of central metal atom Cu, Z = 29
Oxidation number = +2
Step 2: To find the effective atomic number using the formula.
EAN = Z – X + (2 x Y)
Substituting the values we get
EAN = 29 – 2 + (2 x 4)
EAN = 29 – 2 + 8
On simplifying we get
EAN = 35

Copper
- Copper is a metal that has been a part of our civilisation for thousands of years. All of the metals—silver, gold, copper, and iron—have been used in some capacity.
- One of those elements that was never truly identified is copper (Cu). They have shared in every step in the development of civilization. We continue to study about the various ecosystems in which copper is used.
- The metal has been in use for so long that it can still be discovered secluded as a pure element. One could come across pure copper in many forms while tunnelling in a mine.
- It is designated by the symbol “Cu,” which is an abbreviation for the Latin name “cuprum,” as the 29th element in the periodic table.
Summary:-
What is Effective Atomic Number? Calculate Effective Atomic Number of Copper (Z = 29) in [Cu(NH3)4]2+
Effective atomic number is the total electrons present in a complex around the central metal atom. Therefore the effective atomic number of copper (Z = 29) in [Cu(NH3)4]2+ is 35
