We know that

Aluminium sulfate + Barium chloride → Aluminium chloride + Barium sulfate

Al2(SO4)3 + BaCl2 –> AlCl3 + BaSo4

By balancing the equation

1. First, calculate the number of atoms on both the sides

 Atom Number of atoms on the reactant side Number of atoms on the product side Al 2 1 S 3 1 O 12 4 Ba 1 1 Cl 2 3

2. Number of atoms on both sides after balancing

 Atom Number of atoms on the reactant side Number of atoms on the product side Al 2 2 S 3 3 O 12 12 Ba 3 3 Cl 6 6

3. By balancing a number of atoms on both sides

• The number of atoms on both sides is not equal
• Let us balance the atom that is in a larger amount
• The element oxygen contains a large number on the reactant side as 12 and on the product side as 4. Convert 4 to 12 by substituting 3 as the coefficient before it
• By substituting 4 as the coefficient before Barium Sulfate, both barium and sulphur become 3, and sulphur is balanced as it is 3 on the reactant side
• Balance barium atoms as 3 on both sides by substituting 3 as the coefficient before barium chloride
• On the reactant side, chlorine becomes 6 in number so to balance it substitute 2 as the coefficient before aluminum chloride
• Both chlorine and aluminum are now balanced.

By balancing the equation

Al2(SO4)3 + 3BaCl2 –> 2AlCl3 + 3BaSo4

Therefore, the reaction barium chloride reacts with aluminium sulfate to give aluminium chloride and a precipitate of barium sulfate is translated and balanced.
