Updated on: September 25th, 2023

Rigidity factor is the ratio of contact pressure and tyre pressure. It shows degree of tension developed in the tyre. When the pressure in tyre is high, walls are subjected to tension. The walls of the tyre are subjected to compression when tyre pressure is low.

## Answer: The ratio between contact pressure and tyre pressure is called Rigidity Factor.

The formula to determine rigidity factor is “Rigidity Factor = Contact Pressure/Tyre Pressure. Contact Pressure is represented by Pc whereas Tyre Pressure is denoted by P. The value of Rigidity Factor will be 1 when Pc and P are equal to 7kg/cm2. It is more than 1 when Pc is more than 7kg/cm2 but the value of P is less than 7kg/cm2. On the other hand, the value of Rigidity Factor is less than 1 when Pc is less than 7kg/cm2 and the value of P is more than 7kg/cm2.

Summary:

## What is Rigidity Factor?

The ratio between contact pressure (Pc) and tyre pressure (P) is called Rigidity Factor. Contact Pressure affects the thickness of the pavement whereas tyre pressure is affected by surface layer.
