A train starting from a railway station and moving with uniform acceleration attains a speed of 40km/h in 10 minutes. The acceleration in the units of m/s² is 0.0185. The rate at which an object’s velocity changes over time is known as acceleration. It has both a direction and a magnitude because it is a vector quantity. Calculations show that acceleration (a) is equal to the product of the velocity (v) and time (t) changes.

Acceleration can be calculated using the following formula:
Acceleration (a) = Change in velocity (Δv) / Change in time (Δt)
where, t denotes the change in time and v denotes the change in velocity. In the metric system, acceleration is commonly expressed in units of metres per second squared (m/s2).
It’s important to note that acceleration is not only related to changes in speed but also to changes in direction. For example, when an object moves in a circular path at a constant speed, it experiences acceleration because its direction is continuously changing.
Solution
Initial speed u = 0 m/s2
Final velocity v = 40 km/h = 40 x 5/18 = 100/9 m/s
Time t = 10 mins = 600 sec
Let us use the first equation of motion
v = u + at
Substituting the values we get
100/9 m/s = 0 + 600s x a
So we get
a = 100/(9 x 600) m/s2
a = 0.0185 m/s2
Therefore, its acceleration is 0.0185 m/s2.
Summary
A train starting from a railway station and moving with uniform acceleration attains a speed of 40km/h in 10 minutes. Find its acceleration in the units of m/s2.
