Silver Salt Method
These salts break down into a metallic silver residue when heated.
The reaction is:
RCOOH + NH4OH → RCOONH4 + H2O
RCOONH4 + AgNO3 = RCOOAg + NH4 NO4
RCOOAg = 2Ag + CO2 + R-R.
- A little amount of carboxylic salt is used in this procedure, and it is treated with an excess ammonium hydroxide solution to produce the acid's ammoniacal salt.
- Extra ammonia was heated out of the solution.
- A white precipitate of the acid's silver salt is then created by treating it with ammonium nitrate salt.
- After that, the precipitate is cleaned and dried.
- The salt is then burned until an Ag residue that is silvery is produced.
- The equivalent mass of the acid can be calculated from the equivalent mass of the salt.
