Evelyn Glennie was a driven and diligent young woman. She started to lose her hearing when she was eleven. But she persisted, and with the help of her unbreakable will, she surmounted the challenge presented by nature. She started playing the piano and won the majority of the Royal Academy’s top prizes.

Early life of Evelyn Glennie

She was born in Meslick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The musical traditions of Scotland were crucial to her growth as a musician. Piano and clarinet were her first instruments. Her influences were Jacqueline du Pré, Glenn Gould, and Trilok Gretu. She pursued her education at Elon Her Academy in Aberdeenshire and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She was a member of Scotland’s National Youth Orchestra and the Cultz Percussion Ensemble, established in 1976 by Ron Forbes, the school’s percussion teacher.
