What is the principle of DC Generator?

The principle of a DC Generator is Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. It is used to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. The main job of DC generators is to transform mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Principle of a DC Generator

  1. A conductor experiences an electromotive force when exposed to a fluctuating magnetic field.
  2. The generator’s electromotive force equation is used to calculate the size of the induced e.m.f.
  3. The induced current will circulate inside the closed path if the conductor is given one. In this generator, the armature conductors are turned toward the field and the field coils produce an electromagnetic field.
  4. Thus, the armature conductors will produce an electromagnetically induced electromotive force (e.m.f.).

Losses in DC Generator:

In a DC machine, the input power is not entirely converted into the output power. A certain amount of input power is lost in various ways. Losses in a DC machine can be broadly divided into four categories:

  • Copper Loss

When the current passes through the winding, copper is lost. The resistance in the winding is to blame for these losses. Armature loss, field winding loss, and brush contact resistance loss are the three subtypes of copper loss.

  • Core Losses or Iron Losses

When the armature rotates in the magnetic field, there are certain losses in the iron core. Core losses are those kinds of losses. Hysteresis loss and Eddy current loss are two types of losses that these losses fall under.

The electromagnetic induction law of Faraday serves as the foundation for DC generators. Mechanical energy is transformed into electrical energy using it. Electricity is produced by DC generators employing the electromagnetic induction theory of Faraday.
